Chamonix ‘73

I removed the heater box, hood lock bar, and the wiper assembly. The tray is pretty ratty, but it won’t be too bad to repair.  

Also knocked the hinges apart on for the drivers side. This car has been hit in the drivers door. The hinges don’t line up. I’m thinking the “easy” fix is to remove all of the offending metal from the fender mount  around to the pinch weld and replace it all with a piece from the ‘69.

I completed the firewall/floorpan/tunnel metal replacement today with more parts from the ‘69 donor. 

I’ll start sealing and painting later this week (I think).

 

While the drivetrain was out I soaked it in degreaser and pressure washed it. Oh what a difference! It’s gonna look so much better in that clean bay. 

 

I started removing the soft spot from the nose of the blue car as well. I’ll remove the needed sections from the ‘69 nose to fix it. Vintage metal repairs are always the best right? Let this be a lesson to everyone, “Always keep your nose clean.” ? When I got the car in the shop I could see soil piled up in the bottom of the nose. It has since been cleaned out but the damage has been done.

Baikal ‘73

I created both inner structures for the left side of the nose. A little rosin paper, some 20ga sheet steel, and a spare nose to dissect for making templates and I’m pretty happy. I still have the outer skin to create, but given the short time in the shop I’m pleased with what I did accomplish.

Rust never sleeps, Greg Resa and I make a order together from W&N to save on shipping we received two large boxes today...the PM in me has to order the parts early for a car I plan on starting in May...

I spent a fear hours working on the outer skin for the nose. I still have to clean up the welds and massage the patch a bit, but I’m pleased. 

 

I made a test piece to make sure I had the profiles right.

Finally got Survivor 706 down off jacks.  Poor little car, after 20+ years in storage it needs a lot of attention.

Front strut assemblies are sorted out. Only thing I could reuse were the springs.

Clutch is working now after replacing master and slave cylinders along with the hose.

Same deal with the front brakes: new master cylinder, calipers, rotors,  pads and brake hoses.

Rear brakes will get the same treatment before too long but I'm going to focus on the engine for a while now. Runs but not well, leaky and low compressions.

At least I dont have to push it around now.

The catch cam came from an eBay vendor. It is quite nice!

The roundel sticker came from my Brother-in-law for Xmas.

We'll get this installed soon.

I replaced the U channel in the vent window frames.

 

Should have done that years ago. No more window rattle when closing doors!

I cleaned up the welds on the nose repair. Once in primer I could see the transition from the patch to the original panel needs to be cleaned up at the style line. It would likely mostly go away with the application of chip guard, but I’ll spend some more time with it first. 

 

 

 

This car needs to come off the lift for a little while so I took some scraps and a pair of tool box casters and made a dolly.

 

 

 

 

That baby ain’t goin’ anywhere! It uses all 6 subframe bolts.  I figure I’ve got at least 2 more cars that this will see use on, so I might as well make it strong. It’ll ensure the driver’s frame rail on the Chamonix car doesn’t get out of whack when I start repairing it.

Last night I straightened and cleaned up (to the best of my ability) the early 10 slat kidney grille for my '67.

I forgot to take pics last night, but I’ve been busy. I finished reconstructing the inner rocker, rebuilt a small section of the outer wheel well, installed the outer rocker, and started welding in the new outer quarter panel.
