Fixed my speedo!!

Needle was jumpy and much too fast. I did a couple of things:

1.) First, I followed the instructions here to reseat the magnetic wheel: https://www.02restoration.com/restoration-tips/instruments/bmw-2002-speedometer-repair-1972-1976/

2.) I knew I had to increase return spring tension on the needle, somehow. I searched the FAQ and found references to pulling the needle off to gain access to the spring so I could tighten it up. But then I found this topic and of course it made perfect sense that I should be able to just twist it CCW to preload the spring a bit. Worked great and it's now basically dead on at all speeds (according to GPS speedo):

Almost done with the fuel tank mount, just need to add in some 16 gauge sheet metal on the sides

Cut out a LOT of rust, almost an inch above the original gas tank lip to get to good metal

Threw in the re-man’d alternator I picked up that had been sitting on a shop shelf for 15 years. I’m gunna guess when they rebuilt it they didn’t bother to replace the bushings, because they crumbled like grandma’s oatmeal cookies.

Thankfully had the poly bushings from my old alternator I had replaced a few years back.

Good as new!

I dressed up the license plate bracket, with new lenses from Adams. I had to rebuild the inside on one side since the old lens was cracked and allowed water inside that rusted out the bulb assembly, got that from Terry SaytherIMG_20191013_181938.thumb.jpg.4e7f77cbdefbc7630bb468faaf46ee5b.jpg
