Re-flocked glovebox united with my Just Dashes restored 2 piece dash!  It all replaces a cracked up one piece that had a sloppy fitting cap on it.  Just Dashes was great to work with -- they met their 5 month turnaround quote and kept me updated on progress.   Doing this should ensure a repro dash at half the cost comes to market soon...  ?

Wow, the dash turned out great!  Curious what Just Dashes charged you for that.  If you don't mind letting me know please DM me.

Thanks

I parked it in Sioux Falls, Sout Dakota; 1500 miles from home.  The car did great aside from one little overheating incident.

The temp needle was a bit above horizontal when I pulled off the interstate in SE Montana (to get a drink out of the cooler) and the car died on the offramp and would not restart.  This was the hottest the engine got during the 1500 mile drive.  It was very warm outside (and inside).

When I opened the hood I heard a hissing sound coming from inside the air cleaner.

So, I took the air cleaner off and then removed the top of the carb while it cooled down.

There was still 3/8" of fuel left in the float bowl.  It started right up after a half hour rest.  One person did stop (of three cars that went by) and asked if I needed assistance... which was nice of him.

That was the only hiccup along the way, (although I had noticed that the AFR dropped to 10 at idle during a previous warm stop; I'm guessing it was for the same reason (sh!tty ethanol gasoline)).  I will be buying gas at the Sinclair stations now, since they sell corn-free fuel.

I made cardboard window shades for the doors and rear pop out windows and used sleeping mats to block off the front and rear.  That made it nice and dark inside, even though the rest stops are very well lit.

Morning coffee hit the spot.  :)  (the spot underneath the car was there before me)

Western Washington was quite warm as well, so I pulled off in George and sacrificed the end of one sleeping mat, to block off the heater vents because they were blowing hot air on my legs.  The foam on the flaps is about gone and I've been too lazy to fix it.

The side exit exhaust I installed was made for dainty-bumper cars, so I added an extension to the tailpipe before I left, hoping to leave the fumes behind me.  I'd read that they can get sucked back into the car if the pipe exits under the bumper.  It looks a little odd, but worked great.  I just split a piece of pipe and wedged it into the stainless tip.

I goofed and passed by a gas station exit one morning, before realizing/remembering I was low on gas and the next stop was far enough ahead that I pulled off and added my little can's gas to the tank.  I put in over eleven gallons at the next fill up, so I'd cut it pretty close.

It'd be nice if the car wasn't so loaded down, but I'm glad to have tools and spare parts along.  The 3.90 reer differential has the engine spinning 4400 rpm at 80 mph, which is fine as long as it's not ninety degrees outside.  Even then it does okay on warm days, as long as I don't stop!  The temp needle stayed horizontal or a bit below, if I kept the rpms around 4k.  It slows down a bit on the hills though, so I feather the gas to maintain 12 on the AFR gauge and see what it can do.  I'd say it did just fine for a car that turns forty-six next month.

P.S. the Procar seat that @Teelinger gave me was incredibly comfortable.  :)

Mint check out these static cling window shades. They are awesome. They fold up and keep the sun off your arms over long drives. https://www.ebay.com/itm/265796734282?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=Ogu85pBSQ66&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=u7GMipVRSHS&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Bravo, especially if it was your first.  It’s an act of courage for us first-time DIY’ers.  But if you think that one’s hair-raising, wait till you try to make  a correct hole in the front apron!?

Tom, you exceeded the recommended PSI for the air cleaner!

Or ... it was probably ok at sea level but blew-up like a bag of potato chips when you reached higher elevations. ?

Wonder if the thinner air in Montana caused your AFR to drop?

What oil pressure were you getting in the high heat at 4400 rpm?

Your car looks great! Nothing like being well prepared and resourceful to make a 3K mile journey in a 46-year-old.

Happy trails,

John

I think it caused my MPH to drop on the hills.

Right around 65 psi.  This was taken at the same time.

I never did get the new gauge to stop dripping at the crimp connection, so I decided to stop tightening it and put an Altoids tin underneath it.  I stretched the plastic tube a bit to straighten it and I think that may have thinned it and now it won't seal.  I may buy the little kit with tube/crimp fittings and do it over when I get home.

6" of ported vacuum was typical when cruising at that rpm, so only a degree or two of advance was being added.  The all-in advance rpm happens around 4k.  The pedal was often right at the tip in point for the secondary barrel (with the secondary adjuster set at .060") and the AFR would drop from around 14 as pedal was applied.  A lot of light throttle cruising read more like 14.25 and I wondered if maybe being so lean added to the heat under the hood.

How many mpgs are you getting?

I tallied it up and got just over 22 mpg;  but along the way I learned that my odometer is off by 10%, so I must be getting just under 25 mpg.  The odometer reads .9 miles at the next highway mile marker, (while my speedometer reads 10% high).

got this thing cleaned up over the weekend. A quick buff after having it parked outside for a few months helped a lot!

also - I got rear end hit and ran at a red light last year and just haven’t gone around to getting it fixed. It’s right on the right rear taillight and rear panel seam so it’s in a bitch of a spot…

Another simple job. Repainted the steering column under tray in the same crinkle black used for the valve cover. I was also missing a 4 of the six screws and bolts holding it together, so I found replacement for the long fillister ones on Amazon as furniture screws. Original on the right in the photo. Search for “uxcell M6x55mm Furniture Screw Hex Socket Machine Screws
