Received my five new CN36 tires from Longstone. They were great to work with, delivery was about 2 weeks.

What size?  The 185/70 13's are still showing as unavailable.  Patiently waiting... Not really that patient ?

Today I tried the ol' Add-Some-Numbers-to-Your-Temp-Gauge trick.  A superfluous instrument cluster was my first victim.  Looks OK.  Maybe the addition of only 2 marks (instead of 3) would be a little less visually crowded/busy  I will need to fix the 240 which is not level.

I parked it in Sioux Falls, Sout Dakota; 1500 miles from home.  The car did great aside from one little overheating incident.

The temp needle was a bit above horizontal when I pulled off the interstate in SE Montana (to get a drink out of the cooler) and the car died on the offramp and would not restart.  This was the hottest the engine got during the 1500 mile drive.  It was very warm outside (and inside).

When I opened the hood I heard a hissing sound coming from inside the air cleaner.

So, I took the air cleaner off and then removed the top of the carb while it cooled down.

There was still 3/8" of fuel left in the float bowl.  It started right up after a half hour rest.  One person did stop (of three cars that went by) and asked if I needed assistance... which was nice of him.

image.thumb.jpeg.a1d7afd3b8a12cb4474a3ab478a48758.jpeg

That was the only hiccup along the way, (although I had noticed that the AFR dropped to 10 at idle during a previous warm stop; I'm guessing it was for the same reason (sh!tty ethanol gasoline)).  I will be buying gas at the Sinclair stations now, since they sell corn-free fuel.

I made cardboard window shades for the doors and rear pop out windows and used sleeping mats to block off the front and rear.  That made it nice and dark inside, even though the rest stops are very well lit.

Morning coffee hit the spot.  :)  (the spot underneath the car was there before me)

Western Washington was quite warm as well, so I pulled off in George and sacrificed the end of one sleeping mat, to block off the heater vents because they were blowing hot air on my legs.  The foam on the flaps is about gone and I've been too lazy to fix it.

The side exit exhaust I installed was made for dainty-bumper cars, so I added an extension to the tailpipe before I left, hoping to leave the fumes behind me.  I'd read that they can get sucked back into the car if the pipe exits under the bumper.  It looks a little odd, but worked great.  I just split a piece of pipe and wedged it into the stainless tip.

I goofed and passed by a gas station exit one morning, before realizing/remembering I was low on gas and the next stop was far enough ahead that I pulled off and added my little can's gas to the tank.  I put in over eleven gallons at the next fill up, so I'd cut it pretty close.

It'd be nice if the car wasn't so loaded down, but I'm glad to have tools and spare parts along.  The 3.90 reer differential has the engine spinning 4400 rpm at 80 mph, which is fine as long as it's not ninety degrees outside.  Even then it does okay on warm days, as long as I don't stop!  The temp needle stayed horizontal or a bit below, if I kept the rpms around 4k.  It slows down a bit on the hills though, so I feather the gas to maintain 12 on the AFR gauge and see what it can do.  I'd say it did just fine for a car that turns forty-six next month.

Tom

P.S. the Procar seat that @Teelinger gave me was incredibly comfortable.  :)

Hey Tom,

I am just gonna be a fan boy here. Since I started on this website I have always admired your DIY solutions and investigative powers in improving anything and everything associated with your 2002(and posting for our benefit!). Honestly, you never cease to amaze me with the things you come up with to keep your car running/functioning. AND to take a 46 year old car on such a long road trip...? Amazing! I can't even trust my '76 Mint Grün to visit SoCal shops outside of Long Beach to get an evaluation for an engine rebuild. Drive on!

Kind Regards

Philip

P.S. Happy Birthday to mom!

I removed my sunroof headliner panel earlier in the summer and just ran w/ a wide open sunroof for a couple months. Last week I got around to straightening and recovering the mangled headliner frame.

P.O. redid the headliner with foam backed, Joanne Fabric store headliner material. Not going to win any originality contest that's for sure. Anyway, it's back together and does move a lot smoother and easier than before.  I removed the foam layer from the fabric around the perimeter of the frame so it wouldn't be so thick.  I think that helped.

Fasteners left imprints in the fabric after the adhesive dried but that may subside over time or will just compliment the exquisite Joanne's Fabric headliner material.  At least it was cheap and readily available.

Are these plug n play or are any wiring / fuse etc. changes needed to accommodate?

Yeah they were just straight up plug and play, no modifications necessary. They run a lot cooler than the halogens.

There's a good reference chart for bulbs on the discussions boards here, and I just picked up the corresponding LED bulbs.

There's four total in the roundie taillight housing. The backup, turn signal, and brake light are the same size and type, but the running taillight that's on when you have the lights on is a smaller size.

I added the links below, if you want to take a look. If you do replace them, might want to take the time to clean the contacts in the housing and bend them slightly forward so they have more "spring" action where it connects to the bulb.

Ugh! I’ve been scraping the old hood insulation off. I could’ve picked cooler weather. Sweating bullets but it’s coming along! I am not going to remove the old adhesive residue except where the center  pad was located.  The new pads will cover the old glue except for that spot.
