Installed stock air cleaner, summer/winter box and replaced the oil pan gasket.  The oil pan gasket job took a lot longer than expected but Paul Winterton's method or lifting the engine worked like a charm.  Getting all the bolts extracted and reinstalled is what added time.  Some of them are a pain getting too.

The rear seat has been out of my car for a couple years as I've been working on the car.  Every time I move it around the garage a pile of dried up horse hair falls out.

Decided it was a good time to take it apart and see if I could just stuff some foam in there.

It wasn't pretty, at some point in time a previous owner put some gold carpet in there (I'm assuming that it isn't factory) and the upper frame was missing several sections and had broken springs

Lower frame is still solid, so I'm going to cut the springs/upper section out, glue burlap weave to the bottom frame, stuff it with 3-5" of upholstery foam, and see if it's sturdy enough for kids to sit on.

I would POR 15 or use some rust preventive paint on it before doing anything else.

Oddly enough, the lower frame looks perfectly fine., and that's all I'm retaining.  I was told a previous owner was an avid scuba diver, and I suspect wet gear (salt water, Florida car) soaked into the rear seat, was held in by the carpet, and rusted out the upper frame/springs.

Pretty sure my seat covers are not original, they don't look like any other seat pictures I've seen.

Nothing was easy about the steering box rebuild, but after a lot of measuring and remeasuring of shims/torque, hylomaring of screws and shims and messing around with model paint, the steering box went back together pretty smoothly.  I’m relying on a couple of rubbed-in coats of Penetrol to keep the finish from oxidizing.2E15175C-5FE2-474E-B265-EC5D17CAB2A0.thumb.jpeg.959597f2511ecaa3b6609cf36e9ded13.jpeg3D912EE5-35D9-4934-B550-793DBC22CAC3.thumb.jpeg.bdc40a296430b5b06d91ba7566b321dc.jpeg2B3D27F7-033F-4454-843E-D28A5E129D36.thumb.jpeg.acc0c493c3fa703bc12c119da061dad1.jpegNow I’m sweating how well it actually worked out.  I have adjusted the top adjustment nut to what I think is optimal.  Result is: very little play of the shaft and arm at center position, no perceptible play at either end.  But in between it gets gradually more clickety, with between 1/8” and 3/16’ movement at the far end of the pitman arm.  I know there have been posts about the normal degree of play of the arm but having trouble tracking those down.  So your observations welcome.

I’ve been using this on my Tii plenum for a while now after a good clean, it seems to completely stop oxidation, I just give it a yearly clean and another quick wipe over with Penetrol.. great stuff.

?If I’m not mistaken, your posts (among others) convinced me to give it a try.  I really want to avoid painting or clear-coating the engine aluminum, and it certainly goes on easy.  For good measure I also cleaned up my transmission and valve cover and Penetrol’d ‘em.  The plenum?  When I get down to some serious engine work — which happily this tii doesn’t seem to need!

Apropos of nothing, I was a passenger in the back seat of a 2002 that same color owned by a fellow Fremont High School senior named Eric on a May midnight in 1975 just outside Aptos when we were pulled over by the CHIP.  Officer says “son, do you know I clocked you at 105 mph?” Then he lets us go, apparently because he didn’t believe his gun. Love the color.

Looking beautiful. just wondering if you removed the back quarter windows for paint.

Yep, removed everything. Headliner, rear windows, and sunroof were installed before the car was returned today.
