I changed out the shoes yesterday on my 74 tii prior to driving to So Cal Vintage next week. Weather forecast is for a big winter storm to hit the Rockies late in the week (it's still OCT). I pulled the 15X7 ET26 MSW basketweaves out storage,  took them to a local tire shop where they mounted some all season tires. I had Yokohama summer performance tires on the the black ten spoke Amil wheels.  Driving with summer performance tires in snow/freezing temps is a recipe for disaster. I'm liking the look of the open lug weaves (until I have to clean them). Basketweaves are seductively beautiful but they are such a bitch to keep clean.

After picking up the car from the painter on Friday, I got the front and rear suspension installed over the weekend.  Good to see it sitting on its feet.  I was going to wait until I had the brakes done, but need to free up space in the garage.

Nice new tires. My uncle is looking at this BMW 2002 Tii project and it's due for new tires and brake pads. It also got an minor idling issue. We'll check it out this week after we finished installing the suspension and mud tires on the pick up truck.

That went really smootly. Pulled the pitman arm using modified harbor freight 3 jaw. Dunked the output shaft in evaporust for a few hours as well and that cleaned it up ok. Put in the new seals, resealed the shim cover, ultrasonically cleaned all the hardware, and picked up some new locking nuts for the steering linkage.

There’s almost always a grain of wisdom in Ray’s recommendations, even if they’re not long on sublety.482586A8-4317-453D-98E6-2FCB60E3AABC.thumb.jpeg.c91ce98ba0f6e43c2e9298b25ee3e3bf.jpeg

Why?

I believe Ray is referring to the Quick Ratio steering boxes that were painted red.  At one point, devious sellers were simply painting their standard boxes red in an attempt to sell them at the higher prices these QR boxes sell.

A real one for sale in the Classifieds right now, actually.

Ed, when I pulled mine to rebuild it, the body was unpainted, but the “lid” was clearly the same red as the quick boxes.  For a while I thought it might be a (worn-out) quick box, till I worked out — as you rightly note — that those are all red.  Time and grime had removed much of my red paint. and a media blaster got most of the rest, but note a remaining trace in the photo, around the fresh bolts.  I wonder of anybody has traced the development of these boxes.  Conserv?

Small project today:

refreshed the faded hood badge. Was completely silver. Repainted it. I used  engine paint I already had. Took about an hour.

While I wait for parts I took to cleaning the tool kit I found amongst the trash in the trunk.
cleaned up ok for a first (possibly only) pass, all by hand. Soaked in vinegar 24 hours, then scrubbed with metal brush.

I really like evaporust these days. It's worked really well for me. Especially with some heat + ultrasonic. And it doesn't seem to be any kind of acid? So I haven't had to neutralize with baking soda after. Just rinse and dry part.
