I love the look of these. How are they for visibility?

Seems like field of view might suffer(?)

The first rule of Italian driving..what's behind me is not important -Franco Bertollini, my personal hero.

(I can see pretty well with them, they are 4" round which is similar to trapezoids.)

Adjusted the valves and checked headbolt torque today after 400 miles break-in, engine dead cold. Found five of the lot (all intakes, 1 exhaust) had tightened up a couple of thousandths, to .005-.006. Adjusted all back to 7 thou. Expansion, contraction, valves seating, etc. I will check again in 500 miles or so.

Made room for new front strut upper camber plates (out from ones for 200SX). I think I’ve maxed tops now regarding neg. camber.

Today's Observations, Questions, and Musings

1.  Headlights.  I decided to refurbish another set (my third) of headlight assemblies (see photo below).  Yet another rabbit hole the origin of which is the M10 Rebuild Project.  Go figure...  I plan to use Lucky7's suggested McMaster-Carr parts to fabricate new adjustment knobs/assemblies which were posted on FAQ on 12/6/23.  I have used the IE kit, Ace Hardware wonder parts, etc.  However, Lucky7's route looks like fun.

2.  Horns.  I refreshed a pair of >54-year old Hoch and Tief Hella horns and alway wanted to know what was inside and how they worked (see photos below).  QUESTIONS:  Why are the mounting brackets made of three layers?  Why are the horn-to-body holes brass-lined?  Do these horns need extra ground contact?

3.   Grilles.   I need to refresh, to some degree, old 1970 grilles (see photos below).  Both grilles are missing the clear lens on the outside corners.  QUESTIONS:  Any suggestions how a non-professional might do it?  (No, I have not searched yet.)  Mostly 0000-steel wool?  CONFIRM:  1970 grilles have only two silver slats on each side.

I recently completed this rabbit hole. Installed the Ireland Eng. adjusters. Sandblasted and repainted the buckets. Thoroughly vacuumed and cleaned out all spots and spaces behind the grille. Re-painted the areas behind the grille. Used 000? steel wool to clean up the grille.  Had to used paint remover on the horns and wire brush to clean. Re-wrapped all the wiring in cloth tape…

Body work one panel at a time, is slow going for this novice, and sometimes the filler sets up too fast and you screw up a panel and just have to wait it out…

Fixed the horn… pulled wheel and hub and checked for power with a meter. wire brushed the horn ring and cleaned contact points with nail polish remover. Rechecked with meter and buttoned everything back up with a new spade connector.

pulled out a visor and cut it open… lots of ancient foam dust. Ordered kydex sheets to form around the wire frame and some new material to cover it with.. Funny how used we get to Amazon Prime.

As long as I had the meter out I thought I would try to fix the interior light… and broke the crap out of the ancient plastic lens… I take this a sign I should install some LED strips for interior lighting.. back to Amazon!

Small update on the 02 Touring

We still had a couple of parts that need to get zinc plated. We went through our parts on the storage platform and checked what still needed to get done (mainly things we forgot the previous time) and also spare parts that we have laying around that will get plated too, just to have some extras while we are at it.

Some of you might recall that we had already powder coated all the suspension parts etc, but after sitting for a couple of years now; we spotted some rust again.. Turns out it wasn't blasted all that great. It would be a shame to put these parts back onto the car especially with all of the rust repairs we have done so far.

There is a local wheel repair shop that was able to strip all the parts for an okay price.

The light surface rust is from the rinsing but the bigger dark brown spots is "old" rust. In the end we're happy that we decided to get it stripped again. I'll cost us a bit more but oh well

Meanwhile my brother also got started with disassembling the Ti brake booster we got a while back to make the conversion to the dual Solex carbs. The housing will also get plated.

Took some jigging to crack it loose.

I took all of the small parts to work (two big plastic containers) and decided to put them into the ultrasonic cleaner.
We repair injection molds and use a very good product (although pretty expensive). It took the factory paint right of from the brake booster and other parts, that saved a bunch of time having to blast them. As well as the yellow zinc coating on other parts!

I still need to do a couple of parts like the light buckets. The seat rails we will also redo as they are quite spotty, we might polish them a bit before replating to have a nice finish

spacer.png

Crazy to see how shiny the old metal actually was on some parts :)

We also bought a whole bunch of nuts, washers and bolts for the workshop (and 02)
That will be nice to finally have and being able to pick whatever bolt we need for a build/repair in the future

Nothing happened on the 02, but I made some nice progress on my LED conversion article write-up.  I still have to finish and assemble the full write-up (hopefully shortly)-- but I thought I’d start by sharing a key piece that I finished up today:“the summary chart”. 😁

(BTW, sorry it’s taken so long for folks who’ve asked -- life happens, testing takes time, & I wanted to be complete.)

Spoiler Alert:  I have signals/flashers working with the OE electro-mechanical flasher, thanks to latest CANBus tech. And I’ve vastly increased my visibility & candlepower, and doubled/tripled my throw distance in every location. Good stuff..

So think of this as a TL;DR preview, or just a teaser without any explanation attached… ha!

It’s a PDF cuz FAQ image compression makes it unreadable (is too big).
