We do not know if this is yellow metal compatible. Change it to something we know is compatible.

Yeah,  that's what I figured, just trying to decide now what I will run in it!

That is limited slip fluid, only for use in limited slips because of the additives it has.

Here is the safe gl5 gear oils

Seven, thanks so much for that info!  That really helps a lot & the HD article on the testing of the GL-5 oils was very informative.  The mechanic that works on my wife's e53 is an AMS oil dealer so I will be out to see him tomorrow!  Thanks again.

BTW, any preferences on synthetic vs. traditional gear oil?

I was assured by the BMW dealer that this rear gear oil was correct for my 1600. It seem to be running rather warm. I can feel heat from the diff in the trunk.  It does say GL-5 on the back of the can. Am I screwed or can I change it without too much damage

That's fine.  There are no yellow metals in the diff, that issue only applies to the transmission.  Limited slip additives are of no effect in a non LSD, those are for the clutches grip in the LSD.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

Buckeye,  I did notice that, In looking for a hypoid gear oil, traditional, non-synthetic in my area, I could find no oil that was both hypoid and non-limited slip.  That was why I went to the BMW dealer.  I still would like to put a traditional hypoid gear oil in the rear end like the old Kendall gear oil I used to use.  Never had a problem with it but Kendall, as far as I know, is no longer sold.  I even went to our local oil/lubricant distributor looking for the hypoid oil & they looked at me like I had two heads!  Told me no such thing existed!  Again, that's why I went straight to the dealer.  I did look at your link again & thanks again for pointing it out, it was certainly helpful.

Not sure if there is NAPA store in you area or perhaps you could order online what I furnished in my post.

If no luck, be happy to purchase it and ship to you for just for sharing same car passion.

Thanks for the offer, I will keep looking here & online, but if I strike out I will contact you!  Thanks again!

Great info, everyone! This is awesome. I'm doing all my fluids very soon, and this is super helpful.

I've got a side question in the same vein. It was pointed out to me my car has a e21 4 speed trans (Getrag 242), and in a lunch break of casual googling I can't seem to find a constant gear oil capacity for said trans. I've found varied capacities in pints, quarts, adn liters. (2.1 pints, 1.5 liters, 1 liter).

Could anybody wager a guess (that isn't a guess)?

Pages from my last ditch Chilton manual: This gives 2.1 pints for 2002 from 70-74 and then 2.8 pints for 75&76. In 1977 the 320i starts with 2.2 pints which runs out to 1983 when they stopped putting 4 speeds in 3sers.

I would buy 2 litres and the fill up until level with fill plug opening in any case.

Just fill her up till she overflows (Assuming the tranny is nice and level)
