1974 tail panel part number

I am looking to replace the tail panel on a '74 tii.  I checked on part availability, and a new part is available from Germany with the part number 41341828988 ('73 to '76 2002).  However, when my VIN is entered, the part number needed shows 41341828989.  Anyone know why there's a difference?  Will the '...988' fit?

TAIL PANEL - used for 08/1973 to 12/1975 - part #  41341828988   is what is currently available.  BMW MSRP is $742.41.  It should fit as it's for the square tail lights.

I appreciate the information.  I want to use a new panel because the old one has at least 3 coats of paint on it and the bottom section has bondo.  I think the finished product will look better.

It's a lot of work to replace it properly. I would strip and assess what you have first. It might be easier to repair the existing.

Square Tail panel ending in 88 is noted for Euro & '74 USA model in the parts book (no mention of exhaust cut-out, but I guess right [pass] side).

Square Tail panel 89 is noted for USA '75 model with exhaust cut-out in the centre.
