The infatuation with cars can be hereditary

I got the disease pretty late, purchasing my first 2002 in my mid-30's, but appreciating all makes and models.  My son Dylan, age 12, however, is in love with everything on 4 wheels, the more rare and exotic the better.  We wake up early for cars and coffee and travel for local car shows throughout Southern California.  When we travel outside the state, we troll the hotel valet parking lots, looking for exotic gems which he captures on his iPhone like Pokemon Go!  He doesn't like the mechanical stuff and is not down for getting his hands dirty repairing or maintaining my cars, (his sister is the mechanic), but I am thrilled that we have a common interest that we can share.  He surprised me the other day by producing a video montage of the classic BMWs we have captured on our outings together.  So I thought I would share it with the FAQ family.

That's a great video.  No doubt I got my love of cars from my father, and my father got it from his father.  Interestingly, despite years of playing with Hot Wheels when he was young, my son is not super into cars.

So you are lucky.  You have a great thing in common that can provide years of things to do together, things to talk about.  That's how it is for my Dad and I.

But sometimes it skips generations.  I used to tease my Dad that he'd take his car to the shop to have the license plates changed; it was my Mom who was mechanically inclined.  I got "the look" from my wife when for two consecutive Mothers Day gifts I gave my 80+ year old Mom a (1) gift box set of vise-grip pliers, and  the following year an electric drill and bit set.

But my grandpa was a railroad section foreman and built houses on the side, so maybe I inherited his interest (if not skill) in things mechanical.

Encourage your daughter to be a fixit girl, but watch out--you'll be shooing the boys off with a shotgun!

My folks bought one in 1972 from "Alfred's Foreign Cars" in Erie PA. I grew up in the back seat of one. Chewing on the headrest outriggers as a kid. Many long road trips to Oktoberfests and other summer vacations, as far away as Wisconsin and Canada. Definitely imprinted on my little brain as a kid. Been at it for 33 years now (45 years, if you count my non-driving years.) No plans on giving them up any time soon.

Being born and raised in Watkins Glen and my father having attended the first race here in 1948 and then working for 20+ years for the now defunct Watkins Glen grand Prix corporation, I have been exposed to classic cars all my life. My dad always had some sort of euro toy to drive like Alfa's, Fiats, opels, bmw, etc.  Problem was, he never kept any of them. That's why I have kept my 1600 for so long.   My son,who is now 24, was hooked at an early age and enjoys the classic cars we have now: him in the 1600 just before leaving for Arizona to start his career as a pharmacist.  2nd pic is of him waiting to take parade laps at the Glen before the start of the 6 hour race in July in our 633.  He is also an accomplished autocrosser in our 318ti.  He will be looking to do some of that in his mini Cooper s in ne Arizona.  Kind of a bummer for me now as he is no longer around!  My daughter is also into classic cars but likes our 68 mustang more than the BMWs.  My so is already trying to make plans for what his first interesting toy to buy will be!

Complete BMW porn site...  We were at a soccer tournament in San Juan Capistrano and I remembered that the SoCal group was ending their drive in SJC, so between games we drove over to see if we could spot some cars.  We ended up spending over an hour crawling through the racks of cars.  Dylan was over the moon.

Definitely hereditary. Exhibit A - my dad's cab is in your son's awesome video

I spent most of my time talking with your Dad about his Cab and sharing information about mine.  Very nice man, hopefully I'll see him again at Woodley Park this year.

Thank you for all the kind thoughts,

My grandfather was the Dodge dealer in Park River North Dakota, my dad worked on cars at "Skjerven's Garage:

I'm buying that Plymouth.  Not sure where I will put it.

My dad went to "sports cars" after I was born with a TR4 then a 912 Targa.  In 76 he bought a Chamonix 76 from the original location of Lucas BMW here in San Jose.  It snowballed from there to more BMWs, Porsches, Morgans, and Ferraris.

I've infected my 3 boys and each has a 2002

It is in the genes!!
