I watched that car being restored at Bavarian Rennsport, Bill Holmes' shop in Ramona, CA, just outside of San Diego.  I remember it being sold on eBay when it was in San Diego and not reaching the reserve at around $19K, (which I thought was stupid money at the time), so you got a smoking deal!  You should contact Bill if questions come up on previous work and history.

Holy hell! What a coincidence! yeah... lets just say I got it for nearly half of 19k.

What color is the car?

To further answer your question, the color is a variant on the Anthracite grey they came in off the line. Very similar greenish grey color (in the shade, you can hardly tell the difference from spots where the stock paint still resides) but added metallic flaking that gives it the somewhat champagne coloring in the sun.

Great story, and beautiful car.  Please keep us posted as you go.  Sounds like there is a strong community there in Texas.

My first 2002 was a 1974, inka orange, that I bought as a rusty heap in 1980.  It had started life in Wisconsin, then moved to St Louis, where I was in school.  At the semester break in December, I drove it home to Maryland from St Louis.  It had a slipping clutch that got progressively worse as I drove, a problematic defroster, and a wiper motor that expired as I was driving on the Pennsylvania Turnpike during a now storm.  Sounds dramatic now, but back then it was just the sort of road trip I took fairly regularly.

As Mike said earlier, I went for it and drove my 'new' 2002 from Denver to Dayton when I purchased it a few months ago. An adventure is way better than a large shipping bill! (The cool motel is located in Beloit, KS. It had just been renovated. Nice! I was trying to outrun a storm that looked as though it would include tornadoes. The carport saved the 2002 from any hail or wind damage that might have occurred. I was driving from Denver on about 2.5 hours of sleep. Darned if I wasn't really tired that night in Beloit!!) Oh, Best of Luck with your new 2002! You won't regret it at all....
