a/c and 2002's ........

I remember being on a first date in my early teens in a beat up old Saab 900. It was a hot day and we had driven a long way from home. The cooling system was sketchy at best and the needle crept up as we were crawling in traffic so I responded to this by putting the heater on full blast. Saab heaters are pretty good for the cold Swedish winters, she responded by not talking to me as we sweated away with open windows and heat pouring out of the vents. Awkward trip home and suffice to say that we didn't have a second date.

Ouch,. now I feel really old.  The 900's came out when I was in college...

But the A/C didn't work any better in the 1965 Chebby pickup, either...

My favorite description of a 2002 A/C--regardless of make--is from Mike Miller, the Roundel Tech Editor:

"It's like a hamster blowing over a Sno-cone."  That pretty well describes it.

From my research the Frigiking is the only unit that actually cools, and with modern compressor etc is a decent unit. I'll know for sure when mine is ready in a few weeks.

That doesn't accord with my '02 experience these last 44 years.  With the exception of Ray's Frigiking, which pushes out 10-degree air in 90-degree weather, I believe the Clardy produces the highest volume of cold air among the 3 "big names" of period '02 A/C -- Frigiking, Behr, and Clardy -- but the Behr wins the "looks original" contest hands down.  To each his own.

Steve

I think they can all be made to work.

The '02 graveyard behind the old skool shop in Mobile AL -- all (IIRC) the '02's there had Behr a/c.

I asked Tony why that was, and he said because they actually worked.

His opinion as a mechanic, FWIW :)

BTW an evap core below freezing can certainly turn into a block of ice.

It's a risk I'm prepared to accept :D

Oh I didn't say mine pushes out 10 degree air. Just that the core can get that cold ;-)

The (stock) blower is still less strong than I'd like...

Cheers,
