Description:

SOLD: 1976 BMW 2002, 5 speed, Sunroof

Mechanically very well maintained, looks and runs excellent.

         5 speed gearbox

         Weber 38/38 DGES carb

No cracks in dashboard. Heater fan works.

Needs paint and some attention to rust

Car was, and is, well loved. Always stored inside. BMW CCA enthusiast.

I'm more of a "wrench" focused on performance and driving pleasure, as compared to a "concours" person focused on appearance.

Looking for someone who knows and appreciates 2002s and will continue to take good care of this car. No shipping, no trades, no tire kickers, no dreamers. Please keep it real. Serious inquiries only. As said, OBO.  Dickering on price will be entertained....

The 2002 model underwent several changes over the years, due to ever-tightening emissions equipment being required.  By 1976, the cumulative performance hits made the car more sluggish.  Also the added weight of the 5mph bumpers and bumper shocks hurt acceleration.  So for that model year, the diff ratio was changed from 3.64 to 3.91, to restore some pep.

The 3.64, having "longer legs", meant that at interstate speeds, the engine wasn't screaming along at 4k rpm.  I gave up some "off the line" performance in favor of lower engine rpm on the interstate.

But now, with the 5 speed gearbox, the buyer could put the 3.91 back in (I kept the diff), and get that off-the-line acceleration.  And with 5th gear overdrive, the engine rpm on the interstate would be lower.  Best of both worlds...

Thanks for the note!

Too funny!

Yes, putting in original eqpmt (from a different model year) may not be an "upgrade",  per se.  Valid point.

For me,  it was an upgrade, since it improved my interstate driving experience.  For me personally, an improvement.

Some could argue, it was a downgrade, since the off-the-line performance suffered....

And for someone with an earlier model, swapping out their 3.64 for a 3.91 might be called an upgrade , LOL.

Terry,

It was great meeting (re-meeting) you today.

Thanks for the post!

And thanks for confirming that my post and pics accurately represent the car.

2002 owners and aficionados are a great bunch of people, based on my 30+ years of owning two of them.

A totally honest and transparent FS post is testament to that.

Here's a great pic from 02/02/02, when local 2002 owners did a parade lap around Seattle (with police escort), from Alki Beach (W Seattle), to Golden Gardens (Ballard) to the Seattle Zoo (Phinney Ridge)

I think that's a young Byron Sanborn in the white T-Shirt.

This view in Golden Gardens, looking south.

The view is looking North.

It was a huge turnout!

A great community!

And, just to clarify for future generations, the U.S. 49-state versions of the '76 cars came with a true 3.90:1 open differential, having a 39/10 ring/pinion combo. The 3.91 LSD from the e21 cars are 3.91:1 differentials, having a 43/11 ring/pinion combo.  So a 3.90 (‘02 diff) and a 3.91 (e21 diff) differ in their ring and pinion gears.  Especially through 1978, however, they share most other parts...

Below, the original 3.90 from my April 23, 1976 2002 (VIN 2742541), showings its gear and date stampings.

1. horizontally - “10    39” = 10-tooth pinion, 39-tooth ring

2. vertically - “4” over “6” = April 1976

GLWS,

Steve
