5 speed Driveshaft length

I known everyone will be bored of this topic but I'm doing this right now and I'm surprised I haven't read anything on here about the following.

1)  When talking about shortening the drive shaft you're talking about shortening only the front half of the drive shaft, so why do people measure from flange to flange (unless going from a long to short neck diff)?

2)  I like to go my own way so I take the 2 transmissions, stand them on their bell housings on a level floor, put a straight edge across 2 holes on the flex joint flanges and measure up from the floor.  The difference in measurements between the 2 is exactly how much to shorten (the front half of) your drive shaft.

I live pretty much in the middle of nowhere and there are 2 very reputable drive shaft places near me who will cut and weld the 3 bolt d-shaft flange I found on line.  And balance it.  Couldn't be easier, but you would never guess that by reading on here.

I like your thinking here but does this take into account the difference in width between a 8-hole and 6-hole guibo?

Not sure there is much in it but it needs to be factored in.
