Price: $100

Description:

I'm always looking for cars and am pretty sure others want to see nice ones when they come up, so here's a link to a Bring a Trailer auction in progress.  This is a nicely restored, not original color '72.  I'll be very curious to see what it goes for.

Thanks for the heads up, Scott.

There used to be a member in San Diego(It think) who would check the internet on a regular basis and find 02's from all over the U.S. and post them here. I don't know how he did it, but I would enjoy perusing the many different cars while having lunch at my desk.

Then someone on the site wrote that he should stop doing it for reasons I cannot remember, but I think that person was a buyer or somebody who restored '02's or at least it felt that way...

Anybody have any idea what that cylinder object is directly behind the battery and next to the brake reservoir? It has hoses running to it.

I tried to do my "due diligence" and find it on one of the diagrams on http://2009.bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/114/Sedan/USA/2002-M10/LHD/M/1975/september/browse , but could not find out what it is. Thanks in advance.

Whups, just realized this photo is from another car auction happening on BaT right now. Have to say, it is the best color for an '02 EVER! (wink, wink ;)) Ha, ha, ha..

That is the charcoal canister for the gas tank vapor management system.  I have one just like it on my car.  One line comes from the tank and the other goes to the stock carb, I believe.  My carb was replaced and this thing was not hooked up.   Lots of discussion on the site about whether to remove it or hook it back up.  I'm probably hooking mine back up.

Interesting. I did notice that, unlike the other brand/model specific car sites I frequent, there are very few references to cars being sold by non-subscribers.   Personally, when it comes time to sell, I think we all want to see our cars go for top dollar but we also want to find that elusive pristine estate sale car that has been under a cover and driven only on Sundays for 40 years.   I am always looking for cars and have posted many exemplary cars like this to other sites that I contribute to.  I post them because there may be members in the community that are looking for a car, or selling a car and looking for comparisons, or sometimes because the car is unique or ridiculous or because the listing is entertaining (Like the beat up 1967 Alfa Romeo Duetto spider on eBay for $110,000.  I have one in much better shape that will bring less than half of that if I ever decide to sell it.)   And lastly, when a really nice 2002 is listed for sale on a site like BAT, it looks terrific and the images are excellent.  I keep a library of images of engines, wheels, interiors, drive trains, brakes, everything so that I can use them as a reference later.  You had a question about the charcoal canister.  That image, the question and the answer, may help others.

My intent is never to put any BB subscriber at a disadvantage, but to provide additional insight about these cars and what really nice ones are going for.  In addition, we have all seen "should I buy this car?" posts from new subscribers where the seller is selling something that is essentially un-restorable.  (My initial reaction when I see these questions is to go FIND that new subscriber a good example car within his budget...if possible)   I would much rather have cars posted here that represent "Here's what you should get for $5k, Here's what you should get for $10k, etc. so that those who are new to these cars and want to buy, restore, maintain or just drive a BMW 2002 are less likely to get fleeced.   Don't we owe that to the community?

As always, everybody's thoughts on this are welcome.

Thanks,

Scott

Scott,

Thanks for the kind and detailed response. More importantly thanks for contributing to the site and making it a better place for all of us.

I did find the cannister (Mahle charcoal cannister 16121108926) listed by another member, when looking for information on the smog equipment that

used to be on my '76. In looking into that, it is amazing what past mechanics working on my car, felt was important to "just leave off". I am only discovering that now because now i am doing the work on my car(my form of relaxation!). So far it is my daily driver and I want to continue with that.

Les,

Geez, what a great memory you have! Thanks for the link.

Mark,

Please, please start posting again...:(

Well, that IS interesting...   Fortunately, I don't really post these too often.

Jake Joined AND his last post was on April 24th, 2016, both on this topic, so whoever called him out on being a member with an alias was probably correct.   I don't live in California, I restore cars mostly for the fun of it (but it would be nice to break even) and I probably only post cars that are worthy of other member's time for one reason or another.

I am really into Halloween, so I wouldn't be bothered if I resurrected Jake, but I will not be posting these particularly often.

“...reupholstered the seats in a factory pattern...”

Hmm... certainly not the BMW factory during the ‘02 era. Must be referring to some other factory.

Here's an interesting '72 on BAT.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1972-bmw-2000tii-touring/

Took the audience a long time to mention the snorkel, but no one (yet) mentions the "late" front nose (hence the snorkel).

The car I posted about just sold for $16,500. plus BAT buyers commission of 5%, so $17,325.   A fair price.  The red respray with original colors visible throughout the car and the not-quite-correct seats (E9 seats?) with chrome hinges were both a little off.    Overall a nice car, though!
