My final answer.... Digital camera exposure, lighting and not original color mix of Riviera.

I vote for Baikal -- the timing would be about right for this car and a black or black/grey interior would have been a correct pairing.  Additionally, from the brochures, the color is similar to Riviera and Caribe (in fact it replaced Caribe).  Here's what I have from the brochures as far as images and dates:

Caribe is last seen in the 08/1968 Colors Brochure

Baikal first shows up in the 11/1968 Colors Brochure and continues through at least '72 (I only track NK-years)

Riviera first shows up in the 09/1969 Colors Brochure

Riviera vs Baikal (from the same brochure, next to each-other):

All the Blues available for all of NK production (all from different brochures, so don't expect color accuracy):

of course differences in lighting, films/sensors, and lenses could all account for this being pointless =)

Yes, but...Baikal is metallic and this really does not appear to be a metallic color.

Considering all of us see color differently through a computer or phone, and considering whatever is compared was shot in different environments, the best we can hope for in this case is "ball park" guess.

This car was just at an event this past weekend. Someone on this forum must know him/her. how about asking?

I'm still in the Riviera camp :)

but maybe caribe...

If anything, this thread is pushing me to paint mine it's original color

The OP is the owner - they asked because they weren't sure. The email to BMW archives will clear it all up, but I'm 99% confident that it's Riviera.

Is your car Riviera/Caribe?

As my signature says, it's currently Polaris. I found some Siena Braun in the engine bay and door jam. BMW archives told me the original color was Riviera. I have yet to finds any blue in it. I am the third owner.

Not a shocker, Joe!  We've been re-painting these cars for a long time.  And every factory metallic car started that re-painting process extra early....

Best regards,

Steve

for now, my plan is to keep it Polaris and with a black interior. Down the road, do a proper Riviera paint job.

Alright guys, here’s the response to my inquiry to BMW:

The BMW 2002 US VIN ####### was  manufactured on February 03rd, 1971 and delivered on February 10th, 1971 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Riviera, paint code 036.

Yep. In bright light riviera has a light/gray hue.  In dim light riviera looks like a more deep blue.  I see it everyday in my garage.  :)

Pictures don't do much good at all for correct identification of it.

There are also arguably 2 slightly different versions of the mix necessary for riviera.  Mine originally had the one with the slightly more gray hue.
