Does your 2002 use high octane?

87 Octane Ethanol Free works just fine for me.

('76 engines had lower compression)

I read a study (University of Alaska) that using premium grade in a low compression engine (<9:1) is not a good idea.

The high octane prevents knock in high compression engines, but does not burn completely in low compression motors.

This results in excessive soot, fouled plugs, dirty oil, unburned fuel (high HC), and poor efficiency.

You can't get power out of fuel that doesn't burn.

The Manila car has sidedrafts, 292, with flat tops, and the 123Ignition is quite steep/advanced... no pinging on regular 87 octane.  The 2000CS with sidedrafts, hotter-than-stock cam, and a piano tops won't take the advanced timing without the midrange pinging and I put midgrade in it and reduce the advance a bit. (it will get a 123 when it goes back together)

Your mileage may vary...

There's a station here that has non-ethanol 91 on tap, as well as the VP 100 octane basic race gas.  I run the non-ethanol 91 in everything, because no ethanol.

Side note; my supermoto race bike had 12:1 compression.  Factory recommended 98 octane.  I ran it on 87 up here at elevation, never had a problem at all, even middle of the summer at full load all the way up to 10k rpms...  Lower octane makes more power.  God, that thing was a monster.

Edited to ad; which is why I want to build a tii motor to 11.5:1 for up here- so I get a little closer to what's going on at sea level.  I know, I know...

Are all of these quoted octane figures RON or MON or some other measurement method?

my car rounds fine on 91 RON the standard unleaded here but sometimes I put a tank of 95 RON through it, mainly for the claimed cleaning effect. My VW Golf 1.4l turbo uses a minimum of 95 RON but then that is a whizzy little high compression (relatively) thing.

They average the two octane ratings here.

I put some of the Sunoco 100 Octane in my car figuring I'd mix to bump the octane up some. Car immediately began running rough. Fuel filter was full of trash and water. Had to pull and clean the carburetor as well as  dump and flush

the tank. Above ground Tank sitting outside creates condensation and uncoated tank interior creates garbage. Never again

A point to consider is that high octane, premium type fuels often have a lower turnover.  A small gas station with less custom is likely to sell contaminated fuel where not used frequently.

So true  Carl..... All the locals get together Saturday mornings with the Lombos  and Ferraris.   Some few older cars but mostly look at me and look what I have.  Unfortuantely most of these people really do not have much understanding about their cars except for speed and cost.  I showed up in my Jaguar E type....some of those guys did not know what it was.   Most thought it  was a Porsche....LOL.

Abe,

That's hilarious that some had no clue what you're E-Type was.  Not true car people....

Funniest part is that depending on what E-Type you have, it might be worth more than some of the prancing horses or bulls that were there.
