To s14 crank pulley, or NOT to s14 crank pulley..

I am on the fence about cutting down the snout of my s14 crank for a SOHC 2.4 build.. but I don't have a stock s14 balancer.  So I am looking for a good one.

The choice is to cut the crank to accept a 2002 pulley, or cut the cover to accept an s14 seal.

I am not clear yet on which is the most economical and smart way to go about this (smart as in, s14 crank is $), so for now I am in need of the balancer/pulley, as my starting point.

Any input is welcome, regarding the choices, but this ad is an ISO piece.

Thanks all!!  Have a great holiday break!!

If 2.3L you can machine down the nose of the crank. Which is fairly common (get it knife edged while you’re there :)).  If 2.5L the nose is more hollow and there is not enough meat there to machine down. If it were my car I would just machine the crank it makes life a whole lot easier. If not you need S14 balancer, crank sprocket, oil pump sprocket and chain, etc.  You will also need to machine the timing cover to accept the larger seal for the bigger nose. IMO cost will be about the same whichever method you choose.

Thanks, that is what I am trying to determine.. cost one vs. the other. The crank has a new sprocket on it, so there is that..  I have a new s14 oil pump already.. but maybe not the sprocket/chain specific to the s14... I forget. Looks like a hundo for the pair, approximately.

On my 2.2l stroker, a few years ago, I chose to have the S14 crank machined to fit the 2002 pulley... much easier to find parts, should the pulley or timing cover / whatever require replacement...

...plus, I kinda dug having the entire thing look period correct, under the hood. ;)
