Did BMW 1600 come with flag or trap mirror?

Recommended Posts

EDITED from the original.

The flag mirror was introduced in late 1974, so most 1975 and all later cars got a driver’s side flag mirror at the factory.  The trap(ezoid) mirror was introduced around April 1971, when the Modell 71 was introduced. A ‘70 1600 or 2002 would have had a swan’s neck mirror originally.  Passenger side mirrors were a dealer accessory.

Steve

i also have that smaller mirror on my 69 1602

did not know it was called a 'swan neck' mirror

i like that term ... and will use it from now on!

i had to rebab mine since the socket was worn loose

but it is now back in place ... and looks soo perfect

i was also told that these swan-necks are ambidextrous ... so if you find two ... you can have one on the PS as well

Really?  I would have thought it needed the mirror in place when it came off the dock

to meet federal safety regs ('2 rearward facing mirrors')

Kinda like SUV's used to be dumped off the dock with the back seat in a cardboard box

so they could be imported under Utility Vehicle safety and emissions standards.

(no airbags, side impact protection, etc)

Or the Nissan Comp cam came in a box in the trunk, as the car was emissions uncompliant with it installed!

feelings.... nothing more than... feelings...

And yes, you can rotate the head of the early mirror to be used on either side of the car.

There's even a pattern for cutting the holes to mount it floating around here somewheres...

Hmm?  I’m fairly confident they did not have outside mirrors while on board the ship.  I think I thought — is that hazy enough — the outside rear view mirror might have been attached at the port, which would place it somewhere between Chris’s and Toby’s viewpoints!  I watched a few new ‘02’s come off the U.S. car carriers over the years, but I’ll be darned if I can remember whether they had outside mirrors in place.

I thought the cars’ packing list might be helpful (photo attached of my ‘76’s packing list), but I suspect the mirror was simply lumped in with the set of “accessories”.

Steve

My friend David S. (his son Matt might chime in) worked for a BMW dealer in NY as a teenager and he installed the mirrors and antennas.  He also installed 2002 A/C units and actually had to cut the holes in the firewall and radiator panel for the hoses.  That explains the crude holes in my son’s 75 I guess!

My 1971 1600 Voll Cabriolet has a Swan Neck mirror.  These mirrors were standard on the early 1600's.  I don't know what year they cut over to the Trap mirror on the 1600 hardtop cars.

I think this is a darned good question, Mark.  I thought the 1969 calendar year was the last year for the swan’s neck, but maybe that’s not correct.  Here’s a 1969 2002ti, in a photo taken sometime before December 1969, the magazine’s publication date.  Swan’s neck mirror.  Mike S. will likely know more.  Chris will likely know more.

When exactly was the changeover to trap mirrors?

I owned (and wrecked) a very early 1970 model (VIN 1668093, manufactured September 8, 1969).  What did it have in the way of outside mirrors?  It might have had a swan’s neck.  Below is the only photo I have that provides a glimpse of that mirror.  Sorry!

Steve

Steve,  What was the rubber support?  This same list was used for the e9 and I don’t see the wheel chock.

I’ve gotta think about that rubber support, Chris!

My ‘76 certainly never came with a wheel chock.  Neither my ‘67 nor my ‘70 came with wheel chocks, but I bought both cars used: the ‘67 with 50K miles and the ‘70 with 20K miles.  Both appeared to be entirely original down to owner’s handbooks with all components.  And the ‘72 tii I parted in 1974 and the ‘74 2002A I parted in 1975 were low-mileage cars without wheel chocks.  Did just some U.S. ‘02’s come with wheel chocks?

Best regards,

Steve

Only the e9 had a wheel chock but it isn’t on the list, just wondered about the rubber support.

My ‘76’s packing list is marked at the top for 1502, 1602, 1802, and 2002, some of which is handwritten!
