Does anyone know the VIN on this car?  According to the seller's writeup,

This was the 19th 1600 built for 1968.

I don't think it's 1560020; too many obviously original parts that aren't correct for that early a car, such as the chrome strip on the dashboard, a wheel dated Feb '68, lack of cutouts in the upper corners of the trunk bulkhead etc that were present on the very early US spce '68s, mostly carryovers from the '67s..

I suspect the seller looked at the VINs posted in the factory parts book, that show VINs by calendar vs model year.  Model year VINs for US spec, 1968 1600s were between 1560001 and 1565880.

I think he meant the 19th built in 1968. 1562153 or 1562154 was the last ('68) built in 1967.

VIN 1562154 was the first 1600-2 manufactured in the 1968 calendar year.  This car, VIN 1562173, was thus the 19th 1600-2 manufactured in the 1968 calendar year, which is clearly not the same as the 19th 1968 model year car.  And...as Mike points out, that is why this car does not have the indicia of the 1967 and early 1968 model year cars, such as the chrome dash trim, triangular cutouts in the front bulkhead of the luggage compartment, etc.

Regards,

Steve

Oops: Les beat me to the punch!  Les, I’m showing 1562153 as the last 1600-2 manufactured in the 1967 calendar year.  My information is coming from the VIN decoder offered by the BMW 2002 Club of Columbia.

Absolutely gorgeous car!

My guesstimate is that VIN 1562173 was manufactured in January 1968.  If that is correct, the February 1968 spare must have been a replacement or a “snow tire rim”.  But I’m OK with that! ?

Regards,

Steve

My 1600, vin # 1562947 was manufactured Feb. 2, 1968.

Aha, Don!  You’re adding more fuel to my “replacement or snow tire rim” fire!

Thanks and best regards,

Steve
