My 72 tii has the wrong head on it I’d like to address that now that the engine is apart :)

Common issue.  Forty years ago, many an early tii owner, pissed at the cracking plastic runners, was happy to swap an E12 head and complete aluminum runner system onto his/her 121-head engine.  And from 30 to 10 years ago, no one cared whether a tii had it’s appropriate style head.  Now, finding the right style head, un-cracked, without corroded cooling jackets, and within thickness specs is a real challenge.

Good luck and regards,

Steve

Aug 72 mfg tii with e12 head

An August ‘72 car should have an E12 head with aluminum runners (the head here cast in July ‘72).

VIN 2761944 is the first U.S.-spec tii with aluminum intake runners and an E12 head.  That had a mid-June manufacturing date.  At VIN 2762015, just after June 25th, however, it appears that production resumed using the plastic intake runners and a 121 head.  But the aluminum intake runners and E12 head returned for good with VIN 2762373, manufactured in July ‘72.

Paul Wegweiser provided the above VIN numbers.

Best regards,

Steve

Mine still has the plastic runners so I’m looking to keep her mostly original....

Excellent.  Next we’ve gotta work on your car’s oil filler cap and windshield washer reservoir....  ?

By the by, the only difference between the 121 heads that went on tii’s and the 121 heads that went on carbed ‘02’s is the boss for the mechanical fuel pump: not drilled versus drilled. If you’ll only consider heads that have never been drilled, you’re making the search much more challenging. My recommendation? Find the best 121 head you can and, if it happens to be drilled, either blank off the mechanical fuel pump boss or have the holes filled and ground smooth.

Regards,

Steve
