Tii / E28 Fuel Pump Qs

The e28 replacement doesn't seem to come with rubber boots or connections at the pump like some of the other Bosch pumps (#69430). I'm always concerned about having open terminals at the pump and after searching a bit I found this kit for $10 each on ebay.

Seattle-

 

1)  Bosch #69418 is the e28 that has been proven to work, Bosch #69430 is an e21 pump (also Volvo/VW).  I see no reason to venture into trying to use the e21 pump when there is plenty of evidence that the e28 pump works just fine in a tii.

 

2) The banjo fittings don't come with the #69430 pump. Based on the realoem data for an e21.

The fiitings are M12, 1.5 pitch nut, M12x15 washer, & M12 banjo (barb should be 7mm-8mm).

On a separate note, I found what I believe is a suitable replacement for this (16-12-1-177-891) $15!!!  rubber pump support.

You need the #69418 pump, wiring harness, and maybe new hoses and clamps.  No need for a banjo fitting stuff.

 

I also used rubber sheathing to secure the pump in the bracket and shrink tubing to seal up the wires.

Just be aware that the OE Tii pump pushes >103 Liters / Hour @ 5 Bar (73.5 psi) vs. 110 Liters / Hour @ 3 Bar (44.1 psi)

The OE wiring to the fuel pump is 1 mm wire. This produces a voltage drop of over 12%, so either pump cannot pump to the specification.

 

Comparing OE to the replacement, then the output will be even less.

 

Then considering that most harnesses are original, the resistance would be even more due to corrosion and oxidization.

 

The proper size wire should be ~2.59 mm / 10 Ga.. The ground wire doesn't need to be the same since it is very short, but would be good practice to do so.

 

The takeaway is that while puttering around town it would be no problem, but full throttle / full load is a different story.

 

All the pumps from Mesa that I have purchase have worked fine even after sitting for ten years.

I have a Mesa rebuilt pump in my 74 tii and it works great. It is 15 years old and I bought it when Mesa was selling them for $121 each. When BMW raised the prices,  Mesa's supplier raised their price as well. Since my pump is old, I'm following this thread with great interest.

I have 2 Mesa pumps in cars and two on the shelf. Each of the installed pumps sat for 10 years and worked fine; I never thought twice about it, (non rebuilt pumps)...until they didn't work, only three times in 400K miles of driving. That's less than the E30 and E46 pumps that need replacement every 60K miles.

 

My question is, "what is in a rebuild"?

I'm going on a long trip, so followed the advise of this thread and created my spare pump - see photo.  One question - I have  1/8" thick rubber, is this too thick to make up for the different in diameters of original Tii and new pump? If I wrap it around will add 1/8 + 1/8 = 1/4" diameter to the new pump. Thanks

My gut says it's too thick.  Try to find 1/2 that thickness to carry with you as well.  Otherwise your spare looks good.  Hopefully you won't have to get under the car during your roadtrip.  Good luck.

My inner redneck says,  "don't wrap the rubber sheeting all the way 'round the pump.  All you need is a spacer to take up the extra space."

 

I'd recommend some pre-departure messing-around trial-and-error to see how it fits and what else is necessary to get the pump installed and operational.  And especially:  the fuel lines, make sure the fuel lines (both input & output) are of sufficient length to connect.
