Additional numbers on block

The VIN identifies it as an early-ish left drive Euro stick shift 2002 (VINs between 1600001 and 1653979.  Wonder if the extra number came from either an importer or a CKD assembler.  IIRC BMWs imported into the Netherlands had an additional VIN plate attached.

Was the 2551 also stamped on the riveted in VIN plate, or on a separate VIN plate?

I believe I’ve seen this once before on an engine number boss, and the number represented the “code number” for the particular sub-model. The earliest window stickers don’t show the code, but from 1971-ish, the code appears on the window stickers. The window stickers below show codes 2583 (U.S.-spec, Modell 71 tii), 2552 (U.S.-spec, Modell 71, manual-trans 2002), and 2215 (U.S.-spec, Modell 75, manual trans 2002). Someone here — Mike? Les? — has previously shown a list of these codes.

I’m guessing that code number 2551 is a Euro-spec, pre-Modell 71, manual trans 2002.... ?

(Note:  “Modell” years are not the same as “U.S. model” years. Sometimes they coincide; sometimes they do not!)

Regards,

Steve

You can see the chassis codes in RealOEM but only if you search for a specific part number, in this case a brake drum.

2551 is the code no. for Euro 2002s between VIN 1600000 & 1650000. However, RealOem shows it as 2552 for this range ???

RealOEM is correct as far is it goes, but it doesn’t show (clearly) the breakdown between “Modells”. Thus, if you refer back to Chris’s post:

1. 2552 is for a U.S.-spec, Modell 71, manual trans car (U.S, model years “late ‘71, ‘72, and ‘73),

2. 2213 is for a U.S.-spec, Modell 73, manual trans car (U.S. model year ‘74),

3. 2214 is for a U.S.-spec, Modell 74, manual trans car (U.S. model year ‘75), and

4. 2215 is for a U.S.-spec, Modell 75, manual trans car (U.S. model year ‘76).

But all four codes appear in RealOEM simply as “2002, SEDAN, M10, MANUAL, USA”.

Below are window stickers illustrating these codes  for 1972 (July 1972), 1974 (April 1974), 1975 (January 1975), and 1976 (April 1976) model 2002’s, respectively.

(The German “Modell” designation is based on the year when a material “revision” of the model occurred.)

Steve

Finally! We really had to extract that info from you, Les!  ?

So...code number 2552 covers U.S.-spec, manual trans cars for the 1968 through 1973 U.S. model years. I’m surprised there isn’t a break between pre-Modell 71 (to April 1971) and Modell 71 (from April 1971).

Thanks and best regards,

Steve

These are a couple of examples of AlpinA stamped blocks, one is an A2 the other (2088) is an A4.  The heads and blocks were stamped with a 4 digit number - mine weren't the same (my block was 1292 and my head was 3044).  AlpinA assembled heads that they would send out to customers and also use those for full engine builds and they weren't necessarily done at the same time.  The stamping of the head as usually in the middle.  Back in '95 just about the time the dinosaurs went extinct and ' B I ' = Before Internet, I had AlpinA make me up a new hemi head and piston set. I sent them my 300 cam (it was a small bearing 300) and intake, the did all the machine work, port matching etc.,  pretty darn cool I will say.  Ask me how stoked I was to have those fax's in my fax machine in the morning(s).  The new head ended up being 15532.  Sorry a bit off topic.

Here is a pdf of all BMW chassis codes, scroll down to find NK/1600/2002.  Would be nice to save this on the FAQ but I don't have a pdf writer to modify it.

That’s great, Chris!
