What is the difference between an e3, e10 and e30?

E3 - 2500/2800/3.0/3.3 sedans, 1968-1977

E10 - refers, improperly most will say, to the 2002, which is more accurately a Type 114

E30 - 2nd-gen 3-series, 1984-1992

The original "coupe" body introduced as the 1600-2 in 1966 is referred to in factory drawings as the Type 114.  The E10 refers to the Touring body, which came out several years later.  This has been an ongoing discussion for years, but a look in the Factory's "official history" of the '02 (the Orange Book) has a centerfold factory drawing of the approved body, dated May 1965.  It's labeled "114".  And Jackie Jouret's new book confirms that, and she's a very thorough researcher!

New book you say Mike? Any details on that?

And there are multiple places one encounters the Type 114 designation, when snooping around an ‘02. Seat labels, for instance, are identified as being for Type 114.

The two front seats shown below are dated October 12, 1972 (“12. 10 72”) and June 20, 1972 (“20. 6. 72”).

I’ve never come across an E10 designation, but I’ve never snooped around a touring...

My theory with this E10 nonsense is the engine is an M10. Then there's the M30 engine and E30 cars so therefore M10=E10. Then the myth became as pervasive and annoying to those who know it's Type114.

I didn't even know about the 02 being called a type 114 This site seems very informative.

I don’t think that site knows anything about ‘60’s and ‘70’s BMW’s....

And the 2002 is a sedan, not a coupe.  ?

"coupe" was a term British dealer-speak for 1600/2002 to enhance sales. seen in British advertising. I've seen other "sporty" language from the Brits applied to other vehicles.
