I've spoken to the owner over the last couple 9f days.. in order to properly check the common rust areas, would people here recommend taking the car for a PPI, or to an auto body shop? Or both?

If the car "is running well", why doesn't the Seller pull it out of the garage and wash it?

VIN 2743863 is a May 1976 U.S.-spec 2002.

 

A PPI by someone familiar with ‘02’s might be more effective. But, given the rust popping out on the rocker panel, a good body shop should be able to identify evidence of other body issues.

 

The photos presented are dark and grainy. The color does not appear to be an ‘02 color — the dirt and dark photos make identification difficult — which is fine if you’re not looking for an original ‘02 color. Could it possibly be a Turkis metalllic car? BMW Archives (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com) can provide the original manufacturing date and factory color.  Just send them the VIN. No charge. They generally reply within two business days.

 

The front seats and door cards have been recovered in non-stock fabrics-finishes. Again, that’s fine if you’re not looking for original fabrics-finishes.

 

I’m actually hoping this is/was a rare Turkis metallic car with gray interior, a rare and beautiful combination!

Thanks @Conserv yes I noticed the interior and paint didn't seem to be correct, and thanks for the tips on a body shop re the rust. 

When hunting for this car, it's so much more difficult to do so when you can't actually "kick the tire" ?

Considering the Seller has owned the car 20 years, he seems somewhat naive on '02s. That is, as Steve, noted, not an original interior.

@02Les this is correct. Talking with the owner, he admits he's not a car guy, and the original plan was a Father/Son project that didn't come to fruition; fwiw
