3 Quick Questions about '02 horns

Thanks for the replies, everyone.  I was pretty sure that 76s came with only one horn, but didn't realize the second horn was dropped with the 74 models.

And Paul, my 12-72 production '02 came with flat horns also, so the question now becomes when did the factory switch from the seashell to the flat horns.  Was it part of the Modell 71 changes beginning with VIN 2570001, earlier, or later?

And Jim, if you're referring to the Roundel article from the Dec 2002 issue about all the year-to-year changes, it's not in there, 'cause I wrote that article...

cheers and thanks

mike

Mike- that was one of the articles. Another good one was in an older Roundel by Mr. Potheau.

edit:  Found the article in the April 1987 Roundel "In Memoriam 2002" by Michel Potheau, but it does not mention anything about horns, nor exterior mirrors.

Thoughtless!

Question.  Were there any (changing) requirements for decibel ranges?  It seems one horn would be quieter than two horns, generally.  Could regulations have changed the production specs at the factory?

Holy sh*t, Les: I gotta get me one of them! I bought my ‘76 in Nowheresville, Pennsylvania and my horn just goes, “Moo, moo”... ?

So....is the NYC horn louder or softer than the “everywhere-else” horn?  I’d have to guess it’s softer as NYC likes to regulate us — so we don’t all kill each other immediately.

Great sleuthing!

Best regards,

Steve

I wondered, as there's a separate switch, if the switch is located under the brake pedal??? Every time you brake, the horn goes off?

No mention in the book of the loudness (Hz).

Don't lose those attached brackets as they are matched to the horn frequency.

Oh my! I'm confident I've unwittingly swapped a few of those over the years. Good thing my '76 only has one horn.... ?

The second photo shows air horns, a semi-popular period aftermarket accessory. The third photo shows a car alarm siren. The fourth photo is simply a close-up of the label on the car alarm siren.

Good questions, Mike.

Here's what little I know:

1. 1600's sort of merged into 2002's later in the "1600 era", e.g., 1969-71.  Does that mean they acquired a second horn? I have no idea. I've seen too few of these in the U.S. to develop an opinion.

2. My late '76 (VIN 2742541, April 23, 1976) came with only one horn. I'm pretty confident no 1976 '02's came with two horns. But I am not certain when that second horn disappeared. It could have been as early as 1974. Maybe some of the forum's '74 original owners will weigh in....

3. I'm not certain the flat horn was a square taillight phenomenon. I suspect it pre-dates the square tailights: there are lots of the flat horns out there!

Best regards,

Steve

My 9/75 has only one horn, on the left side. I'd need to see pictures of "flat" vs "seashell" to confirm which it has. It appears largely unmolested, I'd guess it's original. Also, no provision for the second horn exists in the harness.

Should be the flat style, as seen in bluehills' first photo.
