Here's an odd one.... '74 2002tii

Hodgepodge

Recommended Posts

Price: $10000
Location: Yountville, CA.

Description:

A 1974 2002tii showed up on eBay.   One image taken from a distance (but the car looks decent overall..).  5  very brief lines in the entire listing.

I sent the seller a message and said "Seriously, one picture is not going to cut it if you expect to bring anywhere what this car is worth. Can we get some more images and info?"

The seller responded with " Seriously, I know what this car is worth, but I will trash it if nobody buys it. Somebody will miss a good deal."

I honestly have no idea what to make of that response other than the seller is a complete idiot.

Take a shot if you want it!   Good luck!   I'll watch.

An ornery seller is not a guarantee of a good buy.

Perhaps no reserve, but the minimum bid was $10,000. Given that we know absolutely nothing about this car, except that the hood and right front fender were replaced and were never painted to match the car, maybe $10,000 is all the money this car warrants. Maybe $10,000 is more than this car warrants.

The front seats are not original. But, based on the single distant photo, we don’t know if the replacements are Recaro’s or out of a Chevy Monza.  I get the sense that more than a few of you think this might be a $30,000 tii. Maybe it is, but it’s fairly unlikely! Facts first. Then determine if it’s worth bidding more than the current $10,000 bid.

Regards,

Steve

A few weeks ago, I barely lost an auction on BAT for a “74 tii.   It wasn’t in awful shape, but I would have done what I do and give it the full treatment.   It sold for $12,500.  I lost the sale because I was bidding from my cell phone.

I don’t mind bidding on cars that need restoration as long as the seller is straightforward.   Clearly, this guy isn’t.   No rust.  Runs great.  Enhanced engine.  I’ll bet the A/C runs cold if you ask.  We all know that even honest sellers don’t know about ancient body damage or hidden rust...and that is with pictures.   No pictures at all?  That’s a $10k gamble with  nearly impossible odds.

I’m guessing the only person that thinks this this is a $30k car might be the seller.   But we will know for sure as the auction end-time approaches.

On the positive side, at least he didn’t post a picture of what the car “could look like when restored”.  Saw one of those today for a rusty old jag Mk2 sedan with no engine.  it is in my watch list along with the beat up $95,000 BIN 1966 “beta” Alfa Romeo Duetto (I have 2 of those that are in great condition that I might get $35k for...).

Still...it is a tii...  we think.

I messaged him and got this when asked what "augmented engine means"

"20 years ago, as a result of my own error, the block was cracked. Consequently all the cylinders were bored out, new pistons were installed, and a new crankshaft".

From that one picture, my spidy senses tingle.

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

There is a reason this person is not showing additional photos or listing more details.

My kid buys these LEGO mini-figures in a “blind bag”. You can not see what you are buying. This is a BMW blind bag. It could be great but it’s probably not what you wanted or expected. Buyer beware!

It says it’s the original owner so they may not be up to date as far as utilizing common technology such as mobile phones.

Um.  Cracked block means replace block, not bore it out....
