Uhhh...casting stones at us old guys? Well, I’ll have you know I have an iPhone 8. Now if I could just remember where I put it.... ?

Um.  Cracked block means replace block, not bore it out....

Generally.

The description, as relayed to us, however, could range from a different block to sleeving the old block — I know, I know, a cracked block is rarely repaired by sleeving. And, admittedly, the current owner wouldn’t appear to be (a.) the target audience for sleeving, or (b.) interested in preserving the original block....

Whoever buys this car will certainly — if they have half a lick of sense — be on the forum, looking for our sage advice, and then we’ll get the whole story!  ?

Regards,

Steve

Bumping this because the listing is back.  First listing says sold for $11,101.  Second listing has some extra copy that was a response to one of our emails.  This guy is amazing....  Clearly, he either doen't care if he sells the car or doesn't have the brains to present it properly.  He posted a google earth of his location though, assuming that anyone interested enough to come see it will probably buy it.   So, here's the realy funny part.  I google-earthed Lincoln Theater in Yountville, and then went to street view.  THERE'S THE CAR!  OK, it's real and it is even covered, but it sits outside 100% of the time.  Somebody let us know if you go to check it out.

Not surprising at all. Far too many fools trying to game the classic car thing. It smelled like fish when it first listed with it's vague details.  The guy sounded like a kook.  An out of touch Californian with a weird sense of entitlement.  Insanity bolstered by a childish belief that if he does not get his way. well damn you all as he makes idle threats to destroy the car so no one else will own it. Like that is motivation to deal with his insanity and over pay in order to save a poor BMW from pending doom. He should take it to a cliff and hold an auction, if no one bids to his desired amount, then roll it off the edge. Hopefully with him behind the wheel.

Typical around these parts, He states in his description the following:

"I drive this car constantly and hate to part with it, but honestly I am tired of it. Seriously, I know what this car is worth, but I will trash it if nobody buys it. Somebody will miss a good deal!"

I have seen and heard in-person many times this unrealistic expectation of an owner/sellers who will say they would rather junk it than sell it for less than they want.  Why not just do it already or list the buy it now price and stand firm.

but what do I know, according to Ryan I'm just bitter. ?

I totally agree.  I'm hoping the previous buyer who backed out comments in some way, either here or through a buyer review.  I'd really like to know if he showed up and said no way, or if he was just a deadbeat.

This is the second time this car is on eBay and the seller says the same thing every time I queried him and I asked why the hood is a different color and he said because he had an accident and left it white to remind him of the accident and that the car was in good shape.  This auction is sketchy at best, I would be forewarned for sure as the old adage, which I have learned by going to look at a bunch of cars, if it is too good to be true, it is.

Three clear improvements from my point of view: (1.) a $7,500 minimum bid makes it more likely that the minimum bid (call it a reserve) does not exceed the car’s value — the previous $10,000 seemed high given what we knew about and could see of the car; (2.) we now know that the car remains numbers-matching, a good thing, particularly for a tii; and (3.) the failure of the first auction to close may have demonstrated to the seller that the car is not worth a small fortune.

Purely a guess here: the winning bidder of the first auction had not yet seen the car in person when he/she bid $11K. If true, bad idea.

If someone is interested, they, or a (good) PPI provider, should simply go to Yountville and look at the car (great restaurants there, as I recall from a recent visit).

VIN 2781633 is an April 1974 U.S.-spec tii (according to RealOEM.com). An email with the VIN to BMW Archives (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com) will confirm the precise manufacturing date as well as confirm that this was a factory Granatrot metallic car. Looks to be a factory sunroof car.

Regards,

Steve

It's BAAAACK!   Apparently, the first sale for $llk+ fell through.  He listed it again.  No bidders.  Listed it again for $7500.  No bidders.   It is listed again today for $10k again.

Alright I'll settle the drama a bit. Maybe create more?

I went out and saw the car. It did exist and was sitting exactly where the seller said is was.

I met the owner. Very nice guy actually. He is fairly old and doesn't really know how to handle eBay or emails. He just wanted somebody to come see the car and drive it away. The car was at a VA hospital. I'll just say that and leave it alone.

The car needs some TLC. It's completely worthy of a restoration. Spare tire well is rusted but that is the only real rust problem that I could find with the car sitting on the ground. The bi-color came from and accident when he slid into a SUV with a spare tire on the back. It was fixed and never painted. Personally, I think he didn't give a shit if it was Calico. My guess is that he drove it a total of 5k miles over the past 10 years.

Long story short, I just talked to him about the new listing and he said he tried to close it and now it's re-listed. He's just very confused with this new fangled technology stuff. I wouldn't recommend bidding on it as it's on a transport truck to my house at the moment!

I'll be very open with my plan for the car. I am going to get the car to my shop and do a real assessment of the condition. I will then decide if I want to restore it or sell it to someone that wants to restore it. Honestly, Tii's are not my passion. I like all the new technology and options that are available for 2002's and I think the Tii's should be kept as stock as possible and restored to factory condition. I currently have 3 2002's in the family. Adding a 4th that is a major project might not be in the stars right now.
