New to this forum, but not the 2002 ( having purchased one new in 1972). Looking to add one as a stablemate to my other 72 mfi German car beginning with P. Is there anyone in this community who might know some history of this mostly original inka Tii? It has been reported that it is a matching numbers Texas and California car with a fresh rebuilt motor. , but that's where the story ends....so far. Would very much like to hear from those in this community who might know more. Thanks in advance for any response, Mike

Probably going to be tough to find specific history unless, for instance, it’s passed through 02Les’s sights over the years.

 

BMW Archives shows it as being manufactured on January 29, 1973 and legally delivered to Hoffman Motors Corp — domiciled in New York City — on February 16, 1973 (that’s purely a legal transfer of title from BMW AG to Hoffman Motors as the sole U.S. importer). Archives’s data does not provide the U.S. Port of Entry or dealer for U.S. deliveries. You’d need a window sticker to find the original Port of Entry. Such window sticker would also provide the original dealer, as would an original service booklet, various service receipts, or various purchase documents. But Archives’ data does confirm the car is a factory Inka example.

 

Any documents accompany the car? Any service stickers underhood or on door jambs? Any old metal service tags, as were commonly placed on radiators during the servicing process? Old window stickers? Old bumper stickers? Have you tried to search on the VIN with any of the state DMV’s where you believe it was registered?

 

Failing all this, have you tried posting photos of the car, along with what you do know, and asking whether anyone recognizes the car?

So...is it correct to assume that a car must have run into some sort of...trouble, in order to find its way into a Copart auction?  E.g., wreck, theft, repo, etc.?

It was a sad looking Copart tii for sure. It had a pre 71 front bumper (still has) and a "snorkel" (now gone), and a stuck mtr (now "rebuilt").

Last I saw (Craigslist) Select Classics were looking for $54k (reduced from $56k) for this car.

I'm the poor sod who bought it a Copart and later sold it to Select Classics. Mike found me recently with a letter using the address that was on the TX title I got when I purchased it. My avitar shows the car pictured at my house where I pulled the head off and did some minor things like have a key made so I could turn the steering wheel. I had gone on severance after 25 years at Bank of America and threw in the towel on this one. Was out of work for over 2 years but working again. I own way too many cars but hope to own another E10 again someday. I drove a 68 1600 for several years as my daily in the 90s before I started driving an E23 (own several of those to this day)..

The name of the owner who sold it to the auction house is Dennis Boyle, now or formerly from Dallas.  It looks like from the records that it was off the road from 1996 , sold to ProjectCar  in 2016 and then to the aforementioned chop shop....which following its tradition of polishing a turd , did just that. It was more a wet fart needing practically everything in order to make it a decent driver. It was advertised as having " no corrosion" ...in fact the driver's floor and frame rail were intentionally disguised with bondo, sound deadener...and a brand new carpet!!   All better now. But if anyone has any knowledge of Mr. Boyle's whereabouts I'd like to make contact to get some more of "Herzenkummer's" history.
