1.) We are getting ready for final paint on my 73 tii and I need to know where the chip guard goes in the trunk. I know that the wheel arches get it and the back of the rear seat but what about the inner quarter panels? Any one have a good picture they could share so we know how to mask the car?

2.) Fuel tank is black, not shiny, correct?

thanks!!!

There may be some changes from 1973 to 1976, but here are some photos of my ‘76’s trunk before the Big Repaint. This illustrates all the factory-original finishes on my ‘76. In general...the chip guard is not on the floor surfaces or on the inside of the rear panel. Everything else appears to have received some chip guard.

The gas tank is black, top and bottom, but not glossy.

Regards,

Steve

My 73 has chip guard (schutz) on both quarter panel insides,  but not on the rear panel, nor the floor around the spare tire well and gas tank--only overspray from doing the quarters.  Inner wheel arches and the panel between 'em is also schutzed, with only overspray on the floor panel between the two wheel arches.  Remember, these were production cars, not hand-built, one-at-a-time cars, so don't mask off the floor, let some overspray happen.

Thank you both for the details. We won't mask, just shoot it to cover as you have described and as shown in the pictures. I will start sharing photos shortly as we get ready for paint. My shell is rust free for the first time in like 35-40 years!!!

Thanks again

timely and I'll be doing my trunk soon. not aware of this chip guard. how is it applied?

Couple ways.  I prefer the Wurth w/ gun approach.

Here's a couple of my car, reiterating what Steve said (and most of what Mike said. I will say that a number of original cars I've seen have had enough schutz on the panel between the shock towers to say that on at least some of them the spray was intentional there.  Some more than others though.)

Ah, here's a shot I had of the trunk spot between the shock towers showing the original schutz.

Road Trip - it varied.  The underbody was thicker texture (so less psi) than the trunk, which was higher psi.  I don't recall exact exact numbers.

How much of the underbody was originally undercoated? Just the spare tire?

If by “undercoating”, you refer to schutz or chip guard, the factory schutz was unevenly applied to the spare tire well: the sides facing outward generally had a full coat of schutz (and a full color coat), the sides facing the gas tank and the differential often had no schutz (and not much color coat, exposing primer), and the bottom had an uneven coat of schutz (and some color coat).

Below, a factory Agave car. Undersides showed a lot of primer from the factory.

And much of the color paint on the underside was simply overspray, hence the coloration of these incomplete overspray areas often differs from the appearance of the top sides.

Steve

thanks Steve. I removed it from the car so many years ago I cannot remember where exactly it was placed and I want to make it as correct as possible. Was the schultz also sprayed on the back side of the rear panel (under the bumper - under the car, and inside the lower rear quarter panels? I mean when you look under the car and see the back of the quarter and rear panel, is it covered?

thank you

Mike

Mike,

My ‘76 had some very sloppy schutz on the reverse side of the lower quarter panels, but not on the reverse side of the rear lower valance. This might well be different on a ‘76 from a ‘73, as square taillight cars had no body schutz on the exterior of the rear lower valance, whereas, I believe that round taillight cars had body schutz on that rear lower valance.

The first photo shows the area between the fuel tank and the right rear quarter panel of my ‘76. Square taillight cars have a box section between tank and quarter panel to reinforce the floor (for increased crash standards). Although the schutz and paint is filthy black, you can sense the sloppy schutz in this area. The second photo, again on my ‘76, shows the exterior of the rear lower valance, un-schutzed and sloppy as hell where the balance meets the quarter panel.

(My ‘73 is not currently available for my inspection.)

Regards,

Steve
