Was the VIN posted?  With those red tail lights and "swan neck" outside mirror, it has to be a '69 automatic--a rare beast as the automatics weren't introduced until sometime in April 69, so were only available for about four months.  The color appears to be Granada, a factory color for 1969.  Bet it's a 3 or fewere digit automatic VIN (2530XXX).

2531049 - '70 model, built possibly Sep or Oct '69.

Seeing the prices wanted for bent early bumpers, grills, etc., I thought $1000 (per ad, maybe he'd accept $800?) was a bargain. Heck, if it's not too rusty (was stored in dry garage since 1991) it could re-appear, after a make-over, for 5 figures the way things are going. Just my $0.02.

I believe the amber-center taillights were mandated by U.S. D.O.T. regulations effective January 1, 1970, and hence the red-center taillights were phased out by that date. Certainly, my very early 1970 (VIN 1668093, manufactured September 8, 1969) came with red-center taillights, the lights having August 13, 1969 (“13.Aug.1969”) manufacturing dates (below), post-dating 1969 model construction.

Thanks for putting another one of those little trivial pieces of the puzzle in place.  I had always suspected that early production 1970 cars had red cetner tail lights, but couldn't "prove" it by VIN.  Yours makes sense.

I do know that by September '69 those red center lenses were NLA from the dealer, as my '69 was delivered with a stuck brake light, which melted the lenses.  When I went to replace 'em under warranty, all the dealer could get were amber center lenses.  Sounds like yet another BMW "use up the old parts" situation.

Pics that I have appear to show, in general, cars manufactured during (up to) Oct '69 had red centre taillights, but by Nov '69 they were orange. I'm sure there are exceptions though.
