Engine Bay Decals

Missing from every duplicate set I’ve seen in the last 35 years are the U.S.-mandated emissions tuning instructions: each year is dated to the model year of the car. Tii tuning instructions are supposed to differ from carbed ‘02’s instructions, but it’s not clear this was always done.

From the first year of this requirement (1969 or 1970?) through the 1972 model year, these were printed in black lettering on a self-destructive (if removed) silver background. From the 1973 model year through 1976, these were printed in white lettering on a black background. The self-destructive feature disappeared beginning in 1973.

Car-Bone (out of Poland) did very nice copies of this sticker for Paul Wegweiser’s 1972 tii, for my 1973 tii, and for my 1976 2002 -- those are three different stickers! These were shortly thereafter listed on the Website and available to anyone, but they seem to have disappeared from the Website by now.

Show and tell (keys to photos below):

1. Original sticker for a 1972 model 2002 (installed, likely by the factory, however, on a tii, VIN 2761208, March 1972)

2. Original sticker for a 1972 model 2002tii (VIN 2762621, August 14, 1972)

3. Reproduction sticker for a 1973 model 2002tii

4. Original sticker for a 1976, 49-state, model 2002 (VIN 2742541, April 23, 1976) - 4 1/4" x 3 1/8" (108mm x 83mm)

5. Reproduction sticker for a 1976, 49-state, model 2002

And did I mention that the 1976 U.S. original parts sticker is different from the 1974 and 1975 stickers? The sixth photo is of a reproduction sticker for 1974 and 1975, used, at least, into October 1975. The seventh photo, lastly, is of an original sticker for 1976 models, implemented sometime after October 1975 (4 3/4" x 3 3/8" or 121mm x 86mm).

Did I say that getting this right is truly a daunting task?

Regards,

Steve

The more I research -- the more I find....really hard to make decals for just a 10-15 cars -- maybe asking a premium price during pre-order would make sense --

Emissions decals are under EPA law so I believe re-making them is impossible -- basically a dealer item or some sort of state issued re-pop seem correct.

I have noticed the different parts decals -- the '76 only is not available if I am correct.

Thanks,

Mo

Set these up on one sheet of white vinyl with crop marks and bleeds. have a sign shop print you off 10-15 sheets, CMYK. hand trim them out with exacto knife and ruler yourself. pretty easy, actually.

I would not be too concerned out the emissions sticker.

Good feedback so far --

Here is the set I recently got from Carl for my '74.  As Mike suggested having a file of pictures for easy access would be very helpful as it's going to be a while before we get to the point of adding the stickers.  Some of mine were missing so we don't know where some are supposed to go!

The oil sticker is missing the C after 30.

The fuse sticker is, I believe, for '76 models. Pic below for '74 & '75 models. For whatever reason, fuses 3 & 4 changed.

Below, an original 1972 sticker and both an original and a copy of the 1976 2002 sticker.

Thanks for posting the 1972 sticker, never seen one intact.  I believe your 1976 Emission sticker is specific to the 49 State Version.  The 1976 CA version of this sticker references the Thermal Reactor in the Engine Modification section, CO2 level settings are different, and the ignition timing is 25 degrees BTDC at 2800 RPM.  The 1975 version of this sticker was very similar to the 76 CA version, but the ignition timing was 25 degrees BTDC at 2400 RPM and the reference year, 1975 was underlined.

I think this is one of those threads some people could not care less about and others find really interesting—I am in the latter.  I have a ‘72 (VIN 2584446, mfg 7/18/72) and a ‘74 (VIN 4222575, mfg 2/20/74) .  The EPA tuning instructions stickers are shown below.  They are the same, except for a slight change to the engine description and the model year.  I would not have noticed the preforations in the first one in a million years unless pointed out by Steve above.  But Steve, could the switch from silver to black have occurred earlier?

Me too.  What I find interesting is two 1972 Emission stickers, one Silver, one Black with two different Ignition Timing specs (25 BTDC at 2000 RPM with specific measurements for CO2 and 25 BTDC at 1500 RPM with best lean idle CO2 goals.  Were these factory installed stickers or applied when the cars hit the docks/dealers?  Usually the ignition timing curves were specific to the distributor used, so did BMW switch distributors during the 1972 model run, or did emission testing or regulations change?

At least the 68s and 69s didn't have this sticker; dunno about the 70s or 71s, but I'm sure someone on the board can confirm or deny.  The only tuning information for US spec emissions cars was in the little supplement to the owners manual that came with the car.

1969 and 1970 2002s had timing info on the EPA sticker, here is my former 69 Manila 02 as well as a Granada 69 and a Sahara and Granada 70 1600.  My 69 2000NK sedan uses the same sticker as well.

I guess so, since Chris is showing obviously-original black stickers as early as 1969!  I, therefore, have no clue whether rhyme or reason lay behind the choice of self-destructive (perforated) silver stock and plain old black stock. Certainly in 1970 and 1972, both existed. Note also that the silver 1972 sticker that I show again below is not for a tii, but it’s applied to a tii.

The second photo below is a duplicate of the 1973 emissions tuning sticker. I had this made by Car-Bone for my ‘73 tii. Car-Bone appears to have removed BMW stickers from its Website: our demand must not have justified maintaining their availability!

Steve
