HTH,

Excellent, although that total number of worldwide 2002’s seems too low if it includes 1600-2’s, 1502’s, 1802’s, etc.

By U.S. model year, U.S. tii’s consisted of 2,629 1972 models, 1,892 1973 models, and 2,928 1974 models.

Regards,

Steve

I didn't realize 1600-2s, 1502s, 1602s, 1802s, and Tourings were 2002s. ?

I have this pic showing 891,940 total '02s were built. However, it does not (I believe) include the 808 2002s & 1602s assembled in Uruguay, the 11,700 2002s & 1602s assembled in Portugal or the cars assembled in Belgium (I do not know the total of these).

Edit: 14,256 1600/1602 were assembled in Belgium, the number of 2002s eludes me.

Nice, Les.

Well if your add the "2002" numbers off your chart (per the definition Taylor/Macartney used for 2002, which I've cited) = you get 418013 of 'em.  Hmm, versus their detailed accounting of 401947.  (I'm aware there's several other errors throughout the guide, but this tabular section seems well sourced.)

But the Taylor/Macartney number could be correct if the totals in Les' chart DID include the "2002s" from the Uruguay, Portugal and Belgium builds, and they were missing from the Taylor/Macartney accounting.  418013 - 401947 = only 16066 cars difference - a not unreasonable 'ballpark' of the percentage of 2002s in totals of those alternate country builds.  Several other numbers between the 2 charts match.  Huh, so 418013 might be right then...

Cool stuff.

Tom

ps: I've attached pic of the chart from "The BMW 2002" that I used.

Well, errors are not the same thing as typos.

A typo would be "KHD" or "OHD" instead of "LHD" as K and O are close to the L on a QWERTY keyboard. Typos are generally obvious and typically don't impact meaning, at least within context. For example, if the book refers to the "2974 model year," it's not too confusing as we can assume "1974" was intended but that a 2 was accidentally typed instead of a 1.

Errors can be harder to identify, particularly when context doesn't correct them, such as likelihood of RHD production for USA.

Hopefully it's riddled with typos and not careless errors, because if there are that many errors that /can/ be identified, how many more are there that haven't been?

Mr. Taylor's QC is about equal to the Chinese. IE,

In his book, the first section is 2002 RHD & several VIN ranges are missing...….should read as follows

pre 71        1650001 - 1653979      3979

model 71   1654980 - 1660000      6021

                  2550001 - 2551473      1473

model 73   4200001 - 4203228      3228

total                                             14,701 & not 9,701
