Top left of the faq Board page.....click on Articles, then History & Reference, scroll down & click on BMW 2002 Service Repair Manual, scroll down & click on section 24, scroll down to pages 25 & 26...…….Voila! The small gap that Jim mentioned is 0.3mm (about 12 thou).

 

FYI the collar ring goes on the steering shaft first then the cancelling cam. The cancelling cam locates in the back of the steering wheel hub (as seen on page 26).

The spring compresses when the nut is tightens down on the steering wheel.
