Hello I'm new to the forum. My neighbor turns out has a 1971 touring 2002 Tii. It has 4,000 kilometers on it. It has sat in his garage for 48 years covered. He never drove it because he was 400 lbs he couldn't get in the car. It hasn't been started in a few years. Unfortunately he fell ill and moved back to the states but left the car. I spoke with his wife at first she wanted 5k I talked her down to 4k. Seems to be missing the top chrome that wraps around the car. It has a moon roof which I have never seen on this model.  The interior is perfect the rubber looks good. Not a scratch or a ding or rust on the car. Paint looks like it was just painted. Opinions on value of the car etc.

The close ratio 5-speed transmission is likely worth the asking price.

That said, I sincerely doubt the claim about the mileage, especially given the fact that the motor was converted from injected to carbureted. Nobody does that just for fun.

I was thinking once it is running and washed and some few minor add ons it would be worth way more than 4K. After looking on the internet they seem to go for a lot. Considering it’s the touring 2002tii. It’s all original. Like I said it’s been covered for 48 years with 2,000 miles on it.

No, it's at least 102,000 miles, the shift knob didn't exist 40 years ago when it was allegedly covered up, it's not a Tii model as evidenced by the fact that it's not a Tii model, and also the emblem on the rear is poorly riveted on, not to mention that Tii Tourings were known as 2000Tii until 1973 when they switched to 2002Tii. Someone cheekily attached that emblem from a 2002Tii. And it appears to have been repainted in urethane.

I could go on, but rest assured this is no 2000 mile barn find.

It definitely has 2,000 miles on it. I know the guy who owns it. The title says 1971 he bought it new in the states and shipped it here. We were neighbors for years and it was never driven. Appreciate the advice. What do you think it’s worth?

Your being told a story. Tourings were never sold in the US.

I seriously doubt that car has spent 48 year (its whole life) just sitting in the garage. It has obviously had a repaint, which may or may not be the original colour. That 4k on the speedo may turn out to be 204k.

Let us know the VIN (as Jimmy said) and we'll tell you what Touring model it really is.

They guy is a lifelong missionary he shipped it from the states. Unfortunately he has Parkinson’s now. But I’m going to talk to his wife. The guy is 400 lbs and the 10 years we were neighbors the only time it left the garage was when I helped him push it out of the garage and start it. So I’m sure on the 4K kilometers he wouldn’t roll it back. But I will get the vin and post it tomorrow. Did they even have a canvas moon roof back then?

The chassis number is 3420190

Yes that's the VIN of a 1971 2000tii, probably built around June. So the car has lost its tii motor along with a few other things. See if you can get a picture of the engine bay overall.

But, missionary or whatever, he would not have bought it new in the USA as BMW did not sell that model over here. Be aware the odo is only 5 digits, so when it rolls over from 99,999 it goes to 00,000 and starts again, the owner wouldn't have to roll it back, it does it by itself!.

Canvas sunroofs were aftermarket and thus not supplied from the factory.
