BMW 02 Made in Portugal

Hello,

I was in winter holiday with my grandson in Portugal. I had read, that there was some BMW manufacturing there in 1970's due Portugal government rules, that any car sold there must be 60 or 70 percentage Portuguese.

I found first this site, which gives models and units produced. The total unit of Portuguese 02 seems to be 12 774 units. They produced also at least E12 there. Link to site: bmw2002.terraweb.com.pt/producao.htm.

Another great site, which gives information about BMW importer and later manufacturer, company was called "Francisco Batista Russo & Irmao", is:. restosdecoleccao.blogspot.co/2017/11/francisco-batista-russo-irmao.html. There is pictured both the facilities in Lisbon and manufacturing plant in Vendas Novas.

I went to see first production plant, couple of pictures below. Everything was locked, I do not know, if there has been other activity since BMW production. I do not speak Portuguese, so I don't know anything about company's history except it was discontinued somewhere 1990s.

Then I went to see company's headquarter in Lisbon, in pictures it looked impressive. But there is a sport store now.

If someone here speaks Portuguese or knows more about company, I would love to learn. For example, to what year company represented BMW in Portugal, did BMW took over there and why was company shut down?

Thank You.

According to Google translate they didn't manufacture the cars there, they just did final assembly from CKD kits. 12,768 "new class" cars. The article references 02 models, but no other NK series cars. Another 2,200 E12 and E21s were assembled before they stopped in 1977.

Cars were assembled at the Vendas Novas site.

Info from several sources;

1068 1502s were assembled (1975-1977)

8072 1602s were assembled (1968-1975)

3548 2002s were assembled (1969-1974)

So I'm at 12,688 '02 units assembled...……...close enough!

CKD 02s were also assembled in Israel (all 1802s) and Uruguay (about 200 IIRC).

I believe CDKs in Uruguay were:

640 2002s between 1970 & 1973

168 1602s between 1968 & 1969

Also, ETS Moorkens, Kontich, Belgium.

14,256 1602s were reportedly assembled between 1966 & 1972.

Unknown number of 2002s (incl the MAXI version).

I have a 2002 that has 2 of the aluminum ID tags, one from BMW Munich and one from BMW SA ETS Moorkens NV. Vin is 2571708 so it's a 1971 that was delivered with the C/R 5 speed and a limited slip according to a PO . Delivery was apparently in Belgium.

Thanks Les! I hadn't heard of the Maxi before.

I just found a little info here:

By all accounts, not very many were built, which is strange as with 145hp it would have blown the doors off most things, including the 2002ti & the later 2002tii.

Did someone say Maxi?

Unfortunately, they wouldn’t have been able to sell them in the UK because Austin sold these instead. The Austin Maxi, probably one of the worst cars ever made, anywhere.

No, the car at least is not worthy of a first or second look. Was the maxi or the marina vying for worst ever title?

Andrew

I think... the Allegro.

There was a never ending stream of crappy British cars in those days.
