There are two types of shift surrounds: the early one, much like a dash, is tough foam over, I’m presuming, a metal armature, and with a vinyl-like surface. These have a removable metal flange to attach the shift boot. That’s a good flange!

 

The later type is simply molded hard plastic with a plastic flange that is prone to breaking. That’s a bad flange!

 

The early style appeared with the April 1971 introduction of the Modell 71. I’ve long assumed the cheap hard plastic style appeared with the first square taillight cars in September 1973, but I don’t really have evidence of that.... ? Maybe it was later....
