1967 gauge cluster with clock, can a tach be swapped?

I was doing some research on 67's on the UK forum. Apparently there was a 6v Tach option (cost was $125 during the period.) Looks like TJones owns a NOS one. More info after the link.

Thanks. Very cool!

What else does Tom have stashed away? ?

It has an October 1971 (“10.71”) manufacturing date, so...four years after 6-volt 1600-2 production ceased, there is still demand for replacement units. This suggests to me that there must have been quite a few of these units in service.

Regards,

Steve

clusters may have been diced and sliced.

Indeed!

Sorry to take so long to respond but we've had iced streets for a few days this week and I couldn't risk getting to the storage unit.

Or have both been painted flat black post-factory?

That appears to be correct as I can scrap off the paint with my nail on both clusters.  By the way the speedo back plate on the one I labeled a 1967 does say 9.67 though the speedo itself has obviously switched out.

is the silver-dollar speedometer dated October 1969 (“10 69”)?

It is actually dated 12.66. One of the QA stamps is also 12.66.  Does that mean that it in fact has a correct 6V (melted!) clock Steve?  Or is that another interloping part?

This is a late '66 dash with the clock replaced with an early Gossen tachometer.

And, as with Hal’s ‘66 and ‘67 clusters, the silver instrument bezel has been painted flat black post-factory. I wonder just how many of the 1966-67 model year bezels wound up painted black?

Best regards,

Steve

Wow, Hal. That December 1966 cluster is early! Although the white plastic housing of the clock looks somehow...un-BMW, that QA stamp on the clock housing certainly looks authentic, so it’s probably an original clock. Tom’s supposition regarding 12 volts killing the 6-volt clock could well be correct.

And a September 1967 cluster should have the silver bezel, as yours has, under its black paint, of course. A September 1967 cluster, of course, should be a 12-volt unit, unless it was manufactured as a replacement for a 6-volt unit.

I mistook your original photo of the 1969 cluster as the backside of the 1966: I was confused!

Thanks for posting and thanks for filling in the details.

Best regards,

Steve

Probably about the same number as the chrome grilles that we sanded (yikes!!) and spray painted black.

And a 6-volt tach, especially since it would pre-date the introduction of the 2002, is probably uber rare, if it, in fact, exists....

So, Hal, does that 1967-dated tach date to the 6-volt era (up to August 18th, 1967) or the 12-volt era (August 18th, 1967, and later). I’m now curious whether there are 6-volt tachs out there.

I've got a 6v Tach Cluster with "5.67" date stamp across all three sections. Doesn't appear to ever have been tampered with which is congruent with the car's unfortunate life (driven not a lot of miles, put away in a barn, rusted to death). It even still has the goofy factory Styrofoam protector for the extra pins.

Cluster is for sale if there's anyone in need

Keeping this thread alive. . .

I just completed this swap. Its very easy and so satisfying! I just wanted to share. . .

I have an early 1600 with the clock in the cluster. I always thought the clock was kinda cool, although a little quirky to have rather than a tach. Regardless, I always dreamt about having a tach in there.

This thread inspired me to actually do it!!!!!

I found a complete cluster on eBay with the correct tach to match the silver dollar gauges, and the sale included the all important wiring harness. Once I got the used part, I cleaned it up, and simply moved the speedo from my original cluster into the "new" cluster.

From what I've read, in order for the tach to work, the middle prong on the back of the tach needs to be connected to either the black post of the coil or the distributor. My car didn't have a loose black wire behind the instruments that some have mentioned, so I just ran a wire from the black post of the coil to the back of the tach, and it works beautifully!

I love this forum! Thank you ?

I’m glad I inspired you. I myself did as you and found a early silver dollar tach but have put off install because I wanted to display in the Octoberfest preservation class.

now that I’ve read your reply, I am inspired to finish
