1973 BMW 2002 Tii matching numbers

I believe you’ve posted the wrong photos for the steering column VIN tag and the engine number. VIN 4223083 is a 1974 U.S.-spec 2002, manufactured February 1974, and not a 1973 tii.

A 1973 tii will have a VIN ranging from 2762630 through 2764521.

Regards,

Steve

Find the 276xxxx VIN and do yourself a favor as an ‘02 seller: email the VIN to BMW Group Archives and request their data on the car. Their email address is:

info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com

They will provide, at no charge and generally within two business days, the precise manufacturing date, verification of sub-model (i.e., 2002tii), factory color (presumably Verona). This will make buyers feel more confident about the car’s bona fides!

This crowd is going to want lots of photos, including underside, engine compartment, luggage compartment...

Good luck with your sale.

Regards,

Steve

2760811  correct VIN

Are you certain? VIN 2760811 is a 1972 tii, manufactured January 1972. I can’t tell much from the photos you’ve posted thus far, but the front and rear bumpers appear to be a 1973-only style (a.k.a., “2.5 mph” and with pointy front bumper overriders).

The front side grilles are of the “shallow grille” style, a style introduced during the 1972 model year but, I suspect, after January 1972.

Thus, from what little I’ve seen, I’d guess this might be a 1973 model, and not VIN 2760811.

Don’t worry, the other forum members aren’t as annoying as I....?

Steve

All Verona's came with a black interior. Maybe original color was green or....

If original color is truly Verona then one of the owners may have changed the interior color to tan somewhere along the line. Either way...I think most likely the paint color changed. Where is Hackmechanic? He should be all over this one by now.

I agree with resra: a Saddle interior in a Verona car (the square taillight Beige or Tan interior was not available until the 1974 model year) would be highly unusual. The headrests in the photos are also “eared” rather than tubular. The tubular headrests, used from January 1969 until the end of January 1973 are largely the same diameter their entire width. The eared headrests, used from the end of January 1973 model year through the end of production, are contoured to keep the seat occupant’s head centered; their outboard ends are enlarged, creating “ears”. And, the headrest supports increased in diameter from 10 mm. to 12 mm. at the same time the headrest shape changed. If this is a January 1972 car, it came from the factory with tubular, not eared headrests.

If the number is 2760811, it’s certainly a 1972. Any possibility we’re mis-reading the VIN, it’s actually VIN 2700811 (a 1971 Euro tii), and it was Federalized in 1973, explaining, at least, the 1973 bumpers? That seems like an unlikely scenario, but the car and its VIN are sending mixed messages as to the model year — not entirely unusual for a 45-year-old car.

Besides the metal VIN tag riveted onto the steering column cover, there is the “chassis VIN” stamped into the outer edge of the right inner fender, at the cowl, the large metal VIN tag riveted onto the right inner fender just aft of the right strut tower, and a paper VIN label on the rear panel of the left door — although a fugitive ink was used on this paper label in 1972.

Verify all the VIN locations and email BMW Group Archives with the VIN, as I mentioned above. An underhood photo will also reveal whether this car has plastic intake runners and no “firewall notch” (generally, VIN’s 2760001 through 2761943 and VIN’s 2762015 through 2762372) or aluminum intake runners and a firewall notch (the other 276xxxx VIN’s). If it’s got plastic intake runners, it’s a 1972 model.

Steve

Very interesting!

2760811 was on Ebay last September in NY. It was Inka (pics below). It appears you may have the motor from 2760811 but, unless Munich screwed up, you have a different VIN tii. I agree with others, from what I see, you have 1973tii there.

The third VIN’s the charm!

OK. Now you’re in business: VIN 2762727 is a U.S. 1973 model tii!

My tii is VIN 2762757, so 30 cars later than your Verona tii. Mine was manufactured October 19, 1972. VIN 2762727 should have a manufacturing date close to mine, possibly October 13, 1972 (I show that date for VIN 2762730). BMW Group Archives can confirm.

The beige (tan) seats in the car are from a 1975-76 model. The black seats are possibly original, or possibly substitutes for the original black seats — the heat seams on the black front seats, at least in these photos and particularly the seat on the left, look like the pre-1972 vinyl. The seats should have dated identification cards in the seat cushion and/or backrest springs.

The car looks quite complete. Good luck with your sale.

Regards,

Steve
