Does anyone know if this sunroof is a factory option or what it is? It looks factory. But it's not like any I've ever seen. I attached a picture of the vin. The car is a 73 automatic.

It looks large. It certainly doesn’t look like the factory Golde sunroofs used on ‘02’s. I’ve seen a few instances of Mercedes-Benz sunroofs being transferred, lock-stock-and-barrel, into ‘02’s. Is there a plastic grip to slide it open and closed? It even has a built-in pop-up deflector!

Cherish it!

Regards,

Steve

@o2 nut was this the car that was for sale in West Seattle a year or two ago? I believe that's the Mercedes type after market roof.

1987 Porsche 944 Turbo (sold)
1973 Mintgrun 2002 "Kermit" (sold)

1973 Inka 2002 "Ernie"

A friend of mine bought the car from a guy in Portland Oregon a couple years back. The car had a late model nose that I've already replaced with a early nose. We have a doner with a good sunroof top. He is trying to figure out if he wants to leave this top or put it back to the original sunroof.

2016-2017 for sale in West Seattle, WA, then later in 2017 for sale in Wilsonville, OR.

If it’s been well done, that’s a tough decision. The Mercedes sunroofs are luxurious in their large size.

From the two I’ve knowingly seen, the width (side to side) of the Mercedes sunroof means that the stock roof’s two shallow “character creases” disappear (they parallel the drip rails, maybe 10” inboard of said rails), and the roof assumes a slightly different arc. But it’s not objectionable or noticeable, unless you are really an ‘02 specialist.

If this were a 1966 1600-2, a 1970 2002ti, a 1972 2002tii, a factory turbo, etc. — I’d feel more pressure to return to a factory sunroof. But — and I intend no offense — a ‘73 2002A is not at the apex of ‘02 collectibility. I believe a steel sliding roof (probably from a Mercedes-Benz) will not have a material detrimental effect on the car’s value. And, again, there is something luxurious about a large retracting sunroof.

This is not a tinted plexiglass pop-up sunroof with a brushed aluminum frame. Now those are value killers!

Full public confession: The first time I saw one of the Mercedes sunroof transplants — and that one was a powered sunroof — I was so smitten by its size, and built-in pop-up wind deflector, that I was nearly ready to put one in my original-owner ‘76! ?

Steve

@Conserv +1.

I considered buying the car when it was for sale in Seattle just for the sunroof. On a restored car, I think it would be a unique and rare period upgrade.
