Show me your driving lamps

Simeon

Recommended Posts

I am in the market (idle curiosity at least) for a set of perfect driving lamps.

Not sure if I want original classics or modern design. Probably chrome (or polished stainless) but I don’t rule out plastic if they look right. Definitely driving or spot lights, something that will help me see in the dark as well as look awesome. 5, 6, 7 or 8 inch? Super Oscars or super-weenie? Most likely round but I can be tempted by sexy rectangles.

Show me what you have and make me want them.

When was the last time (if at all) that you saw Lucas driving/fog lamps on an 02?

Dare to be idiosyncratic; Lucas LR/FT8 set (1 long-range spot+1 wide-beam fog):981256c0d2a632aa42ff101cdc59424d.jpg

Here’s a nice long thread, Simeon:

By the by, Simeon, I understand and appreciate that you are looking to install driving or spot lights. And I know that you know the difference between driving lights and fogs lights. But I also believe that many car owners, even car enthusiasts, refer to all auxiliary lights as “fog lights,” or as “driving lights,” without regard to the light’s design and function. So...one must sometimes look at a lot of “fog lights” to see what they like in driving lights, and vice versa, of course....?

Best regards,

Steve

Oh yeah, I should, of course, take this opportunity to display the Correct Configuration (with capital “C’s”) of auxiliary lighting on an ‘02.

What a coincidence, my ‘76 is a perfect example of the Correct Configuration....?

After 46 years of ‘02 ownership, and far too many experiments with other configurations — meaning (a.) smashed lights; and (b.) holes in the wrong places — I finally arrived at the Correct set-up: Cibie Z-Beam headlamps, Cibie Series 45 clear driving lights mounted with through-the-grille brackets, and Cibie Series 35 amber fog lamps mounted to the underside of my ‘76’s ample bumper.

I would, however, discourage you from adopting the Correct Configuration for two reasons: (1.) it might make my ‘76 less “special”; and (2.) you would need to pay me an annual licensing fee for your use of this proprietary configuration. Yes, the income would be nice, but complying with multi-jurisdictional requirements for cross-border payments is, frankly, a pain in the *ss....?

Best regards,

Steve

I think there are not too many options.

  • Classic/original Hella 140 or 142 (I mean the real 140 not a cheap too modern with also 140mm diameter) but I also like the smaller 118s like Porsche had
  • Rally: cibie
  • Hidden: on my convertible I installed a set of drivinglights behind the grille - one of my favourite mods you can guess there are lights behind the grille

  • Alpina then it has to be a set of marechal

  • Hen's teeth for an early car: my Hella 154 - the only pair I've ever seen combinig Driving and Fog lights (like a Cibie Super Oscar) in a housing that looks like a swollen Hella 128

Rally lights? Driving lights? Spot lights? Fog lights? I really don’t know - but a reference for OP @Simeon

These came with this car when I bought it. If you’re a collector of big, classic lights like this and interested in purchasing, shoot me a PM as it’s probably time I let ‘em go. -KB

Hella 160s. Added stabilizer bars I made from aluminum rod stock in the winter of 2011. Correct green button switch turn on power and high bean switch turns on hi beams and driving lights.

+1 on wiring driving or fog lights.  You definitely need a relay, and if you have a roundie (especially a six fuse car) a relay with a built in fuse.  The high beam switch barely handles the amps from the headlights, and throwing another 110 watts (2 x 55 watt driving lights) into the equation = melted switch--and wires.

As for fogs, I'd wire 'em so the switch wire goes through the parking light terminal on the headlight switch (i.e. the fogs can only be turned on when the parking/tail lights are lit) for two reasons:  (1) having your low beams on at the same time as the fog lights defeats the fog light's purpose and (2) wiring through the parking lights means you won't accidentally leave 'em on--if you remember to turn off your parking lights.

I did a couple of columns on the subject:  installing a high beam relay for your headlights and wiring auxiliary lights.  PM me if you'd like a copy.

A long time ago, I used to have a ‘mismatched’ pair like that (fog and spot, operated by two separate switches) fitted to a mini. Are they Lucas?
