No turn signal return with Nardi steering wheel hubs?

Hodgepodge

Recommended Posts

OK, long story short (you're welcome).

If you have a Nardi or Momo wheel on your 2002, how did you get the turn signal return to work.  I replaced my black E21 wheel with a beautiful Nardi wheel and hub, but the hub has no tab.

Is there a tab fitting?  Is there something I can purchase?  Do I have to fabricate something and attach it to the hub?   I s-l1600.thumb.jpg.a59555538c8e0aac91ff35fbf0087c50.jpgchecked with Jason at Crowders aqnd he did not have any suggestions for the tab.    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Nardi hub looks like this with a pin and no tab.

E21 wheel looks like this.

There is a part listed in realoem that look like it might be a piece that attached to the steering wheel shaft, but I can't tell how it is attached or if it is actually the turnsignal return tab.  The part is  32321118825.

Thanks!

The stock 2002 had a separate piece that went on behind the steering wheel that looked very much like the black plastic piece on your E21 wheel but it is not actually part of the hub.  #8 in the picture

Pryupy, I suspected that was the piece also.   My other 2002 is on a dolly and the subframes are is out, so I will have to be creative and get that stock steering wheel apart.  Hopefully, I will be able to figure out what I need from that wheel. It looks like that will at leasst be the part we identified above.

Thanks,

Scott

Scott:  if you look carefully at the Nardi hub you pictured, you'll see a machined-in groove and lip surrounding the splined center.  That's where you press in the "thimble" that serves as the canceling finger for your turn signal lever.  Its positioning depends on whether your turn signal lever is on the right (roundies) or left (squarelights).  The thimble should be a press fit, but if it's loose, a little dab of contact cement will hold it in position.  Once the hub is installed and torqued down, the thimble will be squashed between hub and the steering shaft hub.

I added a Nardi wheel, and I reused the tab, Number 8, between the hub and the bushing as Preyupy & Mike mentioned.

While we're on the RealOEM illustration, I haven't been able to figure out which part is the steering column bearing.  Number 7 is a "Ring", but it certainly isn't a bearing, as it's a solid piece.  Am I missing it?  My column is making a scraping noise at the steering wheel, so I assume it's the upper bearing.

Thanks,

Tim

It’s 03 the ‘Steering spindle bearing’.

At $99 for a bearing you won’t forget it again.

I had had a problem with mine recently. Pre-loading it and applying pressure across the steering flex joint fixed it.

#7 is a solid piece. I has a small groove on one side that #8 goes into. You need both pieces in order for things to work correctly. My guess is your bearing is ok. Something probably was removed when swapping over to the E21 Turbo Wheel. Is the scraping noise coming from the horn ring? It gets sandwiched between the upper and lower steering column pieces. If all 3 pieces are not in good shape it gets loose and wiggles around.   You have to have all the parts or it's going to sound like a #2. That's enough potty talk. Good luck.

I'll give the preload trick a try.  Hopefully that fixes it, and I don't need the bearing.

Thanks for the info Simeon!

The little piece came in and I installed it.   Called a shaft spring retainer.  Part is 32321118825.   The other part, a collar ring, 32311120260,  was already in place on the shaft.    Works and looks great now!
