Unpopular 2002 opinions: Round 1

Recommended Posts

1. 245 5 Speed gearboxes are over rated.

2. Early Porsche synchroed gearboxes are superior to Borg & Warner.

3. 13" wheels are the only size which looks correct on the 02.

4. Recaro seats are both overrated and don't look right in the car.

5. The stock exhaust flows best.

6. Stock motors are the best for street cars.

7. Long duration cams are best suited for race cars.

8. I wish these cars were not as valuable.

9. Stock distributors with points and condensor work best.

10. The single barrel Solex carb works great.

11. The Weber 38/38 is the worst carb to use on this car.

12. Seats with headrests just don't look right in these cars.

13. The euro style dash with no padding looks best in these cars.

14. The very early cars have the best styling.

15. The 66-67 mirror location at the front of the door works and looks best.

16. etc.

Carbs: They're necessary and barely controlled fuel leaks that sometimes match the air passing through them.

As great of a performer the 2002 is my 78 911 SC can, did and still will spank the 02 in performance.  a stock 02 is slow!

I'm definitely not saying the 2002 is the better performer, it just isn't.  I'm only saying that I like it better.  Yes 911 is certainly faster and the steering rack with no weight on the front wheels makes the handling feel ever better, but it was a tough car to live with and the usage suffered for that.  If I just needed to make a quick trip to the store, I'd always just hop in the 2002 and go, whereas a journey in the 911 always required planning.  Plus working on the 911 was less fun.  Take valve clearance adjustments for example.  On the M10 it's a joy of a job.  But on the 911: up-down-up-down-oil drip on the face-up-down- AND here's another rocker shaft leak! When push comes to shove and I can only choose one, my pick is the 2002.

If you see some of mine you'll revert from that statement - they look absolutetly right in an early 02.

But I'll fully agree with you if you say e21 and newer Recaros are both overrated and don't look right in the car.

I'm glad that BMW 02 were built with only 1/3rd of the cars having a sunroof, because a 2002 with out a sunroof is just a parts car so I'll have parts forever?

Those 1/3 are for short people!
