Description:

1968 BMW 2002

VIN# 1660518

87k miles, All #s matching, Clean Title

This is a very early 68, very original, super clean, no rust anywhere other than surface rust you see in the pics. Super solid body everywhere and 100% original as best I can tell. The mechanicals are completely sorted. Everything, and I mean everything, works as it should and it runs beautifully. The mileage is believed to be accurate/original 87k but I cannot confirm that. The engine was rebuilt by the original owner at approx. 50k miles. The original 4 speed transmission was rebuilt by the PO with a lightened flywheel and new clutch. Over the past year, the carb has been rebuilt, new ignition, most new engine and trans seals, new clutch master and salve cylinder, shifter bushings replaced, all new fluids, all new suspension with HR springs and Bilstein struts, all new rubber everywhere in the suspension, newly reconditioned Borrani wheels (R1-528) in mint shape with new Toyo Proxes RA1 205-60-13 tires. Interior is all new in 2018 (Esty carpet, Aardvarc door panels (all 4), new Recaro front seats, Kooglewerks center console). Dash has two small cracks but very solid/clean. Door handles and window cranks new from Ireland Engineering but original stock components included and in excellent shape if one wants to go back to the stock look. Same for the original AM radio which is included and has been rebuilt and works flawlessly.

It just needs someone to take it the last mile or so with install of the new seals and trim (included with sale), some relatively minor body work and a good quality paint job. The rear quarters were sliced at some point to get ready to install flares but the PO changed their mind and welded it up. The weld job needs some smoothing, but the quarters are solid and were never cut all the way through, just a surface slit on each side.

New Parts Included for install post-paint:

New front chrome bumper from 02 bumpers

All new seals – both doors, windows (all 8), trunk, hood, door handle gaskets, side mirror gasket, door felts, etc.

New chrome trim for door windows and rear windows

Refinished 3-piece grille in excellent shape and ready to install

Also included but not yet installed are 3-point seat belts (mounting holes on the b pillars have been drilled and finished nicely)

I’m sure I’m missing a few things and have done my best to document the condition both above and in the attached photos, but any questions or additional pics just let me know.

I intended to take this one to 100% completion but have run out of steam and decided to sell as it stands currently.  I have over $25k into this. Ugh. It has been a fun process and I’ve learned a ton on this forum and offering it here at what I think is a bargain price of $12.5k. If my pricing seems off please chime in as I just want it to go to an enthusiast that will finish it and enjoy it.

Me likey! ?

VIN 1660518 is probably a March 1968 car (regular 2002 production began in January 1968). This is, therefore, the 518th U.S.-spec 2002 manufactured. Someone should request a BMW Group Archive report (info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com) — hint, hint, hint. And post it here! ?

I’m guessing it’s a Polaris metallic car. If so, is it an 057 code Polaris, or is it an 060 code Polaris?does a “Polaris neu” paint sticker imply code 060? The Archives report will tell! ?

GLWS,

Steve

Note to buyer:  the seller can confirm, but I believe I have the original seats for this car (I picked them up from him a while ago while grabbing some wheels).  I thought I might put them in my car, but after following some of the reupholstery threads I think I will go that route.  If you are planning on going for a stock look, let me know. I am about 10 miles from the seller, so you could grab them at the same time you pick up the car.  They are yours for the same price good guy Boston02 gave them to me for, which is $0.

Buyer,

Get these seats now! Figure out how to best restore them later! But, given the rarity of a March 1968 2002, more original parts are better than fewer original parts.... ?

A thoughtful and generous offer by bluehills2002! ☺️

Regards,

Steve
