Color change from Agave to Baikal, appears well done & looks great with the interior.

Super nice. Even though there was a color change it was comprehensive and in a desirable color so no worries there. Very clean and correct original interior (although not for Baikal), non snorkel tii nose, restored/refreshed undercarriage and trunk and the optional alloys. What more could one ask for? Wait, one owner car until 2018...DUDE.

 

I'm thinking 50K easy.

Yeah, that color-change to Baikal is a value-killer, particularly with a saddle interior ? ?.

 

Seats look year-correct to me, no? 

 

My favorite part of BaT’s description is the picture of the REAR suspension/diff in conjunction with:

 

“An overhaul of the front suspension included a reinforced and powder coated subframe with all new suspension and a steering box reseal and adjustment”

 

On a more serious note, it looks like a beautiful car and should do well, lack of sunroof notwithstanding (I do think that’s a big deal on any 2002 but some don’t share my opinion, especially sellers of...non-sunroof cars).

I agree, Chris. I have yet to see a U.S.-spec 1973 model with chromed recliners, although chromed recliners appear to have persisted on U.S.-spec tii’s until the end of the 1972 model year, and, oddly, only on the tii’s.

 

U.S.-spec cars also received eared headrests some time during the 1973 calendar year.  No one seems to have yet verified whether this was a January 1, 1973, changeover — in response to increased U.S. DOT requirements — or a later event (1973 models built prior to January 1, 1973 all appear to have the older style “”tubular” headrests).  But VIN 2763578 is likely a late February or early March 1973 car. Again, despite the lack of a documented changeover, I expect to see eared headrests on a February or March 1973 ‘02.

 

Lastly, if those are original BMW vinyl seat covers, that’s not the late 1971-through-1973 vinyl, for which the pattern stamped into the perforated vinyl runs through the heat-seamed seams (as below). If the vinyl is original BMW vinyl, then what I’m seeing is the faux-stitching in the flat-bottomed seams — I don’t believe anyone ever duplicated it. That perforated vinyl style ended by sometime in 1971 on U.S.-spec cars...

 

There’s likely a date-stamped manufacturer’s card tucked in the backrest of this car’s front seats that would reveal these seats were manufactured long before February 1973.

 

Note that the rear seat is likely original to the car: it has the correct vinyl.

I stand corrected...my tii had chrome recliners but that was a ‘72, duh.

Couple of other small details--the quarter window latches are missing their little white plastic covers that conceal the screws on the C pillar end (those covers go with the black knob latches that were a mid-73 change from the chrome knob latches), and the trunk side panels are covered in vinyl to match the trunk floor panels--they were originally painted just a flat grey.  The "sport" steering wheel was used only on 1970 US cars (and maybe not all '70s)--this was the famous strike/fire (take your pick) in the steering wheel factory that forced BMW to install the sport wheel on all their cars for at least part of 1970.

 

And I agree with Chris and Steve about the chrome seat recliners.  I've seen a few early '72s with them, as I think the factory did their usual "use up stock 'till it's gone" with seats, and changed over to black painted reclining mechanisms as they ran out of seat colors with chrome recliners, rather than changing over all at once.  And of course a Baikal car should have a black (or blue?) interior...

 

BTW, did anyone notice the adjustable timing chain tensioner bolt?  Never seen one of those.  

 

A very nice car, though.  I'd go the current $8500 bid! oops, it just jumped to $12k...

Good catch. I’d expect, however, that the number of replacement grilles is many times the number of replacement nosepieces, and I, personally, believe that more than half of all surviving ‘02’s have received a new nosepiece during the last 40 to 50 years. Since both the tii nosepiece and the shallow side grilles went NLA aeons ago, many cars today wear “incorrect” parts! And for decades, few owners were even aware of the differences.
