Hans

Recommended Posts

FYI, later 2002s (I think from modell 71 cars on--those with 257/8/9xxxx VINs, and all squarelights) had 45 amp alternators, which must also be available from Bosch...

Any idea what that black gizmo is on the back?

alternator noise suppression capacitor.  To suppress radio interference.  I've received rebuilt units that were missing that piece, so if your old unit has one, make sure you remove it if you have to send back the core.

I have the AL89X sitting in a box. It's basically new. Maybe 400 miles on it. I added A/C, 2 Stereo amplifiers and upgraded my headlights. It just wasn't enough to run it all so I swapped to the e12 alternator with an adjustable regulator. Everything was fine until I added the stereo amps. If you are wanting to buy one I'd sell it to you for $100.
