Story of a Time Capsule.........

about the 99.9% of 1974 model year 2002's that I've seen over the course of the past 40 years which had flag mirrors; I can't imagine such an overwhelming number of cars having their outside mirrors replaced at some point.

One reason might be that pax side trap mirrors were NLA for well over 20 years, so anyone who wanted to add a pax side mirror was forced to get a flag mirror for both sides so they'd match...That's how I ended up with a pair of flag mirrors on my '73, when I wanted to add a pax side mirror.

Early "swan neck" mirror owners are lucky; those mirrors aren't handed and can be used on both sides...

They were NLA for quite awhile until very recently so certainly a possibility. All this talk about trap vs. flag mirrors makes me that much more confident about my red tip Hirschmann being original to my car as well as it was evidently on the car when the previous owner purchased it from the original owner back in 1984, WAY before red tip Hirschmanns became such coveted items.

Although as I understand, they were most commonly found on Porsches in period so my car must have been sold through a multi-marque dealer in the SF Bay Area who also sold Porsches at the time.

Currently on BAT is this 1 owner original '74 2002. It proudly wears a trap mirror.

But back to the subject at hand, we would love to see more pictures when you have time! What a reference for those that are or will be restoring their cars to factory specs.

Huh! Well, I would certainly defer to you but it does make me wonder about the 99% of 1974 model year 2002's that I've seen over the course of the past 40 years which had flag mirrors; I can't imagine such an overwhelming number of cars having their outside mirrors replaced at some point. Some of course could be attributed to accidents, parking lot scuffaws, repaints, etc, but to such an extent?

Not that it really matters in the grand scheme of things as I'm certainly no purist and I personally prefer the look and design of trap mirrors. If anything that only gives me more ammo when people question the originality of my car. Surprising though about the 75-76 brochure which has illustrations with trap mirrors present...

My ‘76’s original driver-side mirror was removed, with extreme prejudice, ca. 1978, while the car was parked on a somewhat narrow street... ? It proudly wears a replacement mirror today. ?

Below, the first “edition” of the 1975-76 U.S. brochure, dated August 1974 (“8/74”). I don’t appear to have an image of the 1974 brochure (Inka car and airplane) with me — I’m traveling — but that also shows a trap mirror. The second photo below is from a factory turbo brochure (sorry, that’s the only photo I have of the brochure in iCloud, so I don’t recall the date). And, yes, the 1974 turbos wore... trap mirrors. Lastly, the February 1976 (“2/76”) edition of the 1502 brochure shows two 1502’s, a Golf example with a flag mirror and a Sienabraun metallic (or, first glimpse of Topasbraun?) example with a trap mirror. Since the 1502 was introduced early in the 1975 calendar year, I’d guess the Sienabraun example has simply been carried over from the introductory brochure — or they air-brushed a photo from the 2002 brochure, converting it into a 1502.

Best regards,

Steve

I can't believe what I just laid my eyes on.  This Polaris/Blue, '74 2002 4 speed, is an absolute time capsule.  Just beautiful! 43k miles!  not 143k miles but a true 43k mile car.  Not a wear mark on the seats, pristine dash and carpet, perfect paint and original Michelin xas tires. Also has all of the glove box books and original tool kit.  I will be helping in the resurrection and sale of the car.    Has the original, like new window sticker and, the shipping invoice. Hasn't been registered or driven since 1990. just sat in this huge garage, covered, all these years.New battery and fuel in the next couple of weeks.

No pics or, asking price yet. The recently uploaded pics below, were from 2013 when, the car was pulled out for a bath and pushed back into position and covered afterward..

The only oddity that I spotted is, the drivers door has a trap mirror. Didn't 74,5,6 have flag mirrors?   Dave swears that nothing but minor service has been done on the car since he purchased it new and, I believe him. Purchased at German Motors in SanFrancisco.  it's 5/74 car.

Stay Tuned,

dq

I am the original owner of my 74 tii and it came with a trap mirror.  When I purchased the car new,  I had the dealer put on a passenger side trap mirror for safety.  I was so used to driving cars with both side  mirrors.  I do regret that decision today.

When I had my 74 tii repainted, I requested a passenger side mirror to be installed (along with side marker light/reflector delete and bumper conversion).  No regrets.  18813194_1905744062776445_4287438088846153155_n.jpg.0b1478455b4795158fe837d55305e51d.jpg

Good point, Joe!

A bona fide Alpina-prepped tii and a 43K 2002 just “drop in”?  Within a year or so of each other?  I smell conspiracy... no, maybe it’s money laundering... no, maybe it’s a bargain with the devil... ?

Whatever, gotta get me some of that! ?

Best regards,

Steve
