Looking for info on car I purchased

I am purchasing a 1967 1600-2 (VIN 1520114 ) and am trying to get some info on it as the seller  doesn’t really have much knowledge about the car. Apparently, it came from California and has had a bunch of work done by a respected shop there.   I don’t have the name of it or any records though. Hopefully someone here can recognize the car and give me some info.

Are they stating this is an Alpina car or just a clone ?

They didn’t say anything. Pretty much what I see is what I bought. The don’t think it is any part of a real alpina. It is very much a restomod rather than restoration.

It looks like a very well-crafted car, but with an M20 six, 5 speed, short neck diff and full CV joint axles, there's not a lot of '67 1600 left except the body shell--those parts were well in the future when that car was originally built.  With the upper part of the nose panel/radiator support cut away, I wonder what's holding the nose in place, especially when that heavy hood is up...and only six fuses?  Hope there's an auxiliary fusebox squirreled away somewhere...

Bet it's a fun ride!

Only thing I know is it's been on Ebay a Loooong time

It was way over-priced. They admitted as much when I bought it.  I paid way less than it was listed for. I think they finally got motivated before winter set in.

Don't have any specific information, but I bought a car that has an e30 motor with an e30 radiator with an e30 overflow bottle like your set up.  In my instance there isn't enough height to get the reservoir bottle above the radiator- so the radiator would drain back into the bottle and not stay full.  Caused weird cooling problems for me.  YCMV.

Car looks like it'll be a LOT of fun.  Alpina seats and wheels?

Dave.

'76, totally stock. Completely.

Well... someone spent a lot of time and money on this, and hoped they’d recoup it....

I have no clue what you paid, but I’m betting you could not nearly replicate the work — forget about the cost of the car — for what you paid.

As Mike mentioned, there’s very little of the original car here, but BMW Group Archives can provide the manufacturing date and the original exterior color. My incomplete records suggest that VIN 1520114 was a 1600-2, probably manufactured in late March 1967, and — likely, since the car is in the U.S. — imported by Hoffman Motors Corp (the NYC-based sole importer).  The car originally had a 1.6-liter engine, long-neck differential, and a 6-volt electrical system. Although a few 1966 1600-2’s trickled into the U.S., a March 1967 example remains a notably early car, partly because few were sold and partly because even fewer survived.

Certainly a stint in California suggests the car could have been California-delivered, or at least California-resident, and you might want to file — there’s a form for it — a request to see if the VIN has ever been registered in California. The BMW Archives report will likely say the car “was delivered to Hoffman Motors of New York City,” as do the reports for 99.9% of all U.S.-delivered ‘02’s. The “delivery” to Hoffman, however — generally done before the car was shipped — is simply legal delivery of the car from BMW AG to Hoffman Motors, and does not speak to the car’s U.S. Port of Entry. You’re going to need a window sticker to know the Port of Entry.

Just send an email to info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com, requesting their data on the car. There is no charge and you generally receive a reply within two business days.

Hey, it’s a start and it’s free.

Attached below is a photo of the window sticker for another 1967 1600-2, which was probably very similar to yours at the time of initial sale.

Congratulations!

Regards,

Steve

Where did you read that this shop was respected?  It could be a great car, but please please please get thorough PPI done before taking delivery. Best of luck!  Hopefully it checks out.

They told me it was respected. Considering they didn’t know the name of the shop, I’d take it with a grain of salt. The only evidence I have is that the work seems thorough and beyond what some guy could do in their backyard. It was a bit of a gamble, but I didn’t do a PPI. I doubted that I could

find someone qualified in traverse city, MI anyway and I’m counting on, at the very least, getting my money’s worth with the parts and previous work that I could build on. FWIW, it drove well when I test drove it.

I’m probably going to take it over to the Werk Shop In Chicago and have them go over it in the spring, after I have a chance to do some investigation and drive it for a while.

I also found out today that it came with power locks.

Obviously the work of the restomodder or another prior owner: not a factory possibility on a ‘02 (from 1966 through 1977).

Enjoy!
