ROLL CALL: taiga tii

This car’s manufacturing date and Archives info are already in my database, suggesting that we discussed it previously, and someone requested and posted the Archives data.

Thus, I’m showing June 15, 1973, as the build date and June 27, 1973, as the legal-transfer-to-Hoffman Motors date.  It was, indeed, a Taiga metallic example (paint code 072). My notes also show it for sale in Asheville, NC, on May 2, 2018, and rusty... ?

Look carefully.  Don’t pay $18.5K for a non-op ‘73, especially if it has material rust — even if it is a factory Taiga example!

Regards,

Steve

It sold for around $5k in July and the current Seller does not appear to have done anything to the car. In August he was asking $22,500.

Thanks, as always, Les!

But the current flipper... er, I mean, owner, says it has “NO RUST”. So I’m guessing he must have managed to carefully repair the rust without disturbing the car’s... patina, in any way... ?  Brilliant! ?

Oh, here’s a past forum discussion of it:

Best regards,

Steve

One thing that might be a cool idea for our famous web developer, would be to have a filter option within the registry to filter a few of the categories.  That is to say like show me all the vehicles of a chosen color.  Or show me the vehicles of a given year.  That probably would answer quite a few of repetitive questions we see on the FAQ.  Maybe the FAQ Gods are listening:)

Jeff

I was really hoping that this thread would produce a  bunch of immaculate taiga examples.  Such an eye-popping color especially against early chrome.

Obviously quite rare.

Yes, quite rare... this was best example I could find... would have preferred Taiga but  finally “settled” on a very sweet ‘73 in Malaga.

Sadly, the Taiga category is void of car pics ?

+1

Exactly, Ed! ?

Here’s my gripe session for the day: The Registry is so damned easy to use, and has so few categories of sortable data, why can’t more forum members (a.) request BMW Group Archives data on their entries (FREE, TAKES 30 SECONDS to send an email with the car’s VIN to info.grouparchiv@bmwgroup.com);  (b.) enter their car in the Registry; and (c.) spend ten minutes loading the complete data and (lots of) photos into their entries?

Why? Well, just for example, once you’ve noted in the sortable field that your car is Taiga, wouldn’t it be nice to show what it looks like? Embarassed to show off a “project”? Get over it! All 50 year old cars are located somewhere along the “project car spectrum”! ?

Most of the sortable categories have drop-down lists that make them so friggin’ easy to use, and nearly impossible to screw up! ?

Everyone wants more data on the cars, but no one wants to spend ten minutes so we can have it at our fingertips! Get off yer butts! ?

There: I feel a bit better.

Best regards,

Steve

A response to the changed California SMOG laws (no Webers nor headers allowed) at the 200,000 mile ground up restoration costing ultimately twice the cost of a new 1991 318iS.

I never thought it was a "tribute" at the time (just more power), but there it was, celebrating 400,000 miles.

At first I didn't like the color, but bought the car from a friend with "only" 50,000 miles in, uh, 1977 for $4000..at the time, it had the dreaded clear coat issues;

but I just deemed it "self cleaning paint".

After the repaint, I grew to like the uniqueness much like Turkis and Ceylon; so much for being ubiquitous.

then there's the one ClassicMotorsports magazine did several years ago.

https://classicmotorsports.com/project-cars/1972-bmw-2002tii/

That car has got the early-style filler neck that disappeared with April 71. I don't think taiga was offered before 71...

Somebody who knows better? Steve maybe?

Great eye, yes you are correct on your dates.  This is an early ‘71 (with side markers removed).  The original Sahara color was enthusiastically removed via media blast.  I figured Diana’s were also non-original colors...and my kids both really liked Taiga.  This is by no means a factory-correct restoration, more of an oem+ style.

On a related note.... Sadly, I recently inspected what turned out to be a vin-swapped Taiga 2002tii roundie imported from a European “restorer”.
