Very cool Cosmic Mk 1's. How wide are they? I've got an even earlier set that came on my 1600ti. Mine are only 4.5" wide.

I did a lot of research and I don't think any Cosmics were magnesium-- only aluminum alloy.

Regardless they would look great on an early car and yours are in fantastic shape.

You maybe right that they are Alloy. When I bought them, the guy told me they were Mag wheels. I maybe wrong. BTW, They are 5.5 inch wide. Yours look super cool too.

Hey, Michael,

I’ve got absolutely nothing authoritative to base this on, but I still believe there are both magnesium alloy and aluminum alloy versions of the more common style of Cosmic rims, Mark II’s, but not this, the Mark I. Not all models, not all sizes, and not for the full term of rim production.

Why do I believe this? Only because since the 1960’s or early 1970’s, the first question asked about any Cosmic rims has always been: magnesium alloy or aluminum alloy?

If a saw a 13x5” that weighed about 10 lbs., I’d strongly suspect it was magnesium alloy.

Yeah, I realize it’s kinda thin! ?

Best regards,

Steve

Steve, these weigh about 10.5 lbs each and they are 13x5.5!

Hmmm... that’s close to the the weight of a Cromodora or Campy — both magnesium alloy — in a 13x6” size....

(I better check this in the Wheels Database! ?)

EDIT:

(1.)  13x5.5” Campy Ragno (mag. alloy) = 10.1 lbs.

(2.)  13x5.5” Herbert Hahn Campy (mag. alloy) = 9.6 lbs.

(3.)  13x5.5” Cromodora CD32 (mag. alloy) = 9.6 lbs.

(4.)  13x5” FPS early OEM alloy (alum. alloy) = 10.8 lbs.

(5.)  13x5” Lemmerz OEM “ti/tii” (steel) = 13.4 lbs.

Thus, a 10.5 lb. 13x5.5” rim — this Cosmic, Mark I, for instance — is either a heavy magnesium alloy rim or a lightweight aluminum alloy rim. Frankly, if it’s a lightweight aluminum alloy rim, rather than a heavy magnesium alloy rim, you’re getting most of the magnesium alloy benefit without all that magnesium alloy fussiness!... END EDIT

Michael, what do your 13x4.5’s weigh?

Best regards,

Steve

Well they are very light-- but they should be because they're the size of an Oreo.

Unfortunately they're across the country from me so I won't be able to weigh them for a while.

I have to say, the way they look/feel/patina/don't have weird blooms all says aluminum to me. Like you, I see a lot of people on the web asking if early Cosmics are magnesium but I've looked at early Cosmic advertisements etc and never seen anything to back it up.

I have the same wheels on my 67 1600 (5 1/2 " x 13" Cosmics, ET19 offset ?)

I found the center caps at a VW parts vendor below: I paid $4.99 / each for metal caps with retainer clip. But, now they are asking a little more. And, they seem to be out of stock. But, these center caps are used on many cosmic wheels which are popular with the VW crowd.

I love my Cosmc MK 1 wheels, and they look great on these cars.

I've attached a pic of the wheels on my car before I obtained the center caps.

Cosmic's ads of the day state......Mk1 & Mk2 - aluminium alloy L.M. 25. Heat treated to condition W for maximum strength & ductility.

Les,

I’m familiar with this from Cosmic’s July 1972 brochure (below). And the aluminum alloy construction is certainly unambiguous in that brochure. I’d love to see, however, one of their 1967-68 brochures, just to put this myth to bed, as it has persisted for decades....

Best regards,

Steve
